Office Chair Recline Adjustment
Admin October 10, 2026
The methods for adjusting the recline of an office chair vary depending on the adjustment mechanism. Here are the common types and operating steps:

I. Lever Adjustment System
- Locate the Adjustment Lever
It is usually located on the right or left side under the seat, and some chairs may integrate it into the edge of the cushion. You need to bend over to observe or touch it to confirm its position. - Release the Recline Lock
If the chair has a locking function, you need to release the lock through the lever first. The operation method is mostly to pull up or push forward the lever, and the specific direction needs to be adjusted according to the chair's design. - Adjust the Recline Angle
Slowly lean your body backward while using the lever to control the speed of the backrest tilt. Some chairs require continuous pressing of the lever to maintain the adjustment state and will automatically lock when released. - Lock the Target Angle
After reaching a comfortable angle, operate the lever again (such as pushing it back or pulling it down) to complete the locking. If the chair has no locking function, you need to maintain your body balance to keep the angle.
II. Knob Adjustment System
- Locate the Knob Position
Most are located near the support column in the center under the seat, and some high-end chairs may be set on the side of the backrest. The knob surface usually has โ+โ/โ-โ marks or resistance adjustment scales. - Adjust the Recline Tension
- Clockwise Rotation: Increases the backrest recline resistance, suitable for users with a larger body weight or those who need stable support.
- Counter-clockwise Rotation: Reduces the resistance, making it easier for users with a lighter body weight to recline easily.
It is recommended to make small-amplitude adjustments multiple times to test whether the resistance matches your personal needs.
- Adjust the Recline Angle (if applicable)
Some chairs are equipped with an independent angle adjustment knob, and you need to refer to the product manual for operation. Usually, you need to unlock it first (such as pressing the knob) and then rotate it to the target angle and relock it.
III. Pneumatic Adjustment System
- Identify the Pneumatic Lever
It is mostly integrated with the height adjustment lever, and the functions are distinguished by pushing in different directions. Some chairs use a separate pneumatic control lever located on the right side of the cushion. - Adjust the Recline Angle
Gently pull the lever and lean your body backward, and the backrest will move smoothly to the target position. The pneumatic system does not require additional locking and will automatically maintain the angle after releasing the lever. - Return to the Upright Position
Push your body forward to the upright sitting position. Some chairs require operation with the control lever (such as pulling the lever outward to unlock the upright lock).
IV. Special Function Operations
- Recline Lock and Unlock
Some chairs have a control lever on the right side of the cushion. Pulling it out allows free recline, and pushing it back locks the angle. To return to the upright position, you need to pull the lever to unlock it first and then push it back to lock it. - Dynamic Resistance Adjustment
Adjust the resistance according to the usage scenario: when slightly reclining for office work, the resistance should be slightly higher to maintain support; when resting, reduce the resistance for a deep recline. Users with a larger body weight are recommended to increase the resistance to avoid a feeling of falling.
Precautions: Before adjustment, confirm the weight-bearing range of the chair to avoid damage caused by overweight use. If you have difficulty operating it, it is recommended to consult the product manual or contact after-sales service for specific guidance.
