Office Chair Quality Supervision
Office chair quality supervision covers multiple aspects, including national supervision and random inspections, local inspection rules, and recall management, aiming to ensure product safety and compliance.

National Supervision and Random Inspections: Focusing on Key Safety Indicators
The State Administration for Market Regulation conducts regular inspections to supervise the quality of office chairs. For example, in an inspection of 90 batches of products from 90 enterprises across 11 provinces and cities, 21 batches were found to be unqualified, with an unqualified rate of 23.3%. The problems mainly centered on flame retardancy, caster wear safety, and formaldehyde emissions. On September 30, 2024, another round of national supervision and random inspections found 15 batches of products to be unqualified, with stability issues being particularly prominent, such as chair tipping and structural looseness, which could directly lead to user falls or injuries. These inspection results reflect deficiencies in raw material selection, production processes, and safety design among some enterprises, and also highlight the national focus on supervising high-risk items.
Local Inspection Rules: Strengthening Regional Targeting
At the local level, taking Anji County as an example, implementation rules for quality supervision and random inspections of 12 types of products, including office chairs, were formulated for 2026. These rules are based on laws and regulations such as the Product Quality Law and the Consumer Rights and Interests Protection Law, combined with relevant requirements in Zhejiang Province and local industrial characteristics, and complement provincial rules. The core contents include:
- Dynamic adjustment of inspection items: Based on recent inspection data and consumer complaints, high-frequency problematic items such as flame retardancy, formaldehyde emissions, and structural stability are prioritized for inspection;
- Standardized procedures: Clear sampling methods, inspection processes, and judgment criteria are established to ensure transparency and traceability of the inspection process;
- Timeliness management: The validity period of the rules is usually 1-2 years, and they need to be revised in a timely manner according to updates in technical standards or new quality issues. Such rules enhance the precision of local quality control by refining regulatory requirements.
Recall Management: Addressing Major Safety Risks
For defective products that have already entered the market, recalls are an important remedial measure. For example:
- In March 2023, the United States and Canada recalled office chairs made in China due to the possibility of backrest breakage, with 12 reports received (including 10 injuries);
- In January 2025, the United States recalled WorkPro Momentum office chairs made in China due to bolt failure that could lead to falls, involving 7 reports (2 minor injuries). These cases indicate that insufficient structural strength and connector failure are the main reasons for office chair recalls. Enterprises need to strengthen product lifecycle quality traceability and promptly respond to safety feedback from overseas markets.
Office chair quality supervision requires multi-party collaboration: national inspections set standards, local rules fill gaps, and recall mechanisms control risks. Consumers should pay attention to product certification marks (such as the China Compulsory Certification (CCC)) when making purchases, while enterprises need to strengthen their quality management systems to avoid legal liabilities and brand damage caused by safety issues.
