Office Chair Puncture

Admin October 08, 2026

Cases of office chairs puncturing human bodies or objects are mostly related to the explosions of pneumatic lifting chairs, which pose great hazards and have diverse causes.

Hazard Manifestations

The injuries caused by the explosions of pneumatic lifting chairs are shocking. In Xiamen, Ms. Liu was sitting on a pneumatic chair when it suddenly exploded. A three-centimeter steel rod pierced her lower body and went straight into her uterus. Doctors removed more than ten metal fragments from her body. In Jiaozhou, Shandong, a 14-year-old boy had a rod pierce his buttocks and damage multiple blood vessels while adjusting the height of a pneumatic chair. He eventually died from excessive blood loss despite rescue efforts. In Zhoushan, Zhejiang, after Ms. Lou's chair exploded, the seat was punctured, and a large number of fragments penetrated her body up to ten centimeters. These cases fully demonstrate the severe harm that pneumatic lifting chair explosions can cause to the human body, potentially resulting in serious injuries or even death.

Causes of Explosions

  • Poor-quality pneumatic rods: This is one of the main reasons for the explosions of pneumatic lifting chairs. Poor-quality pneumatic rods may have the problem of overly thin tube walls, which makes them unable to withstand normal pressure and prone to breakage during normal use. At the same time, impure inert gases or the use of compressed air instead of nitrogen are also common issues. Nitrogen is a chemically stable gas that can stabilize the pressure inside the pneumatic rod, while compressed air is unstable and can easily lead to pressure runaway, triggering an explosion.
  • Lack of explosion-proof steel plates: Explosion-proof steel plates can to some extent block the impact force and fragments generated during a pneumatic rod explosion, reducing harm to the human body. If no explosion-proof steel plate is installed, when the pneumatic rod explodes, the fragments and impact force will directly act on the human body or surrounding objects, causing serious consequences.
  • Excessive temperature due to frequent seat lifting: During the process of frequently lifting the seat, friction inside the pneumatic rod generates heat. If this heat cannot be dissipated in a timely manner, it will raise the temperature of the gas inside the pneumatic rod and increase the pressure. When the pressure exceeds the bearing limit of the pneumatic rod, an explosion will occur. Experiments show that the impact force generated when a pneumatic rod explodes can reach 70 - 80 kilograms, which is enough to puncture six density boards and cause serious harm to the human body.
