Office Chair Primer

Admin October 08, 2026

The selection of office chair primer should be based on the general characteristics of furniture primer and actual needs, with a focus on environmental protection, functionality, and cost.

I. Core Functions of Furniture Primer

Furniture primer serves as the base layer in the painting process, with main functions including:

  1. Enhancing Topcoat Adhesion: By filling the tiny pores on the wood surface, it forms a smooth base, enabling the topcoat to adhere more firmly and reducing the risk of peeling.
  2. Sealing Wood Pores: It prevents moisture and oils in the wood from seeping out, avoiding issues such as discoloration, blistering, or cracking of the topcoat, especially suitable for woods with high oil content (such as pine and oak).
  3. Saving Topcoat Usage: The filling property of the primer reduces the penetration loss of the topcoat, lowering the overall painting cost.

II. Key Points for Selecting Office Chair Primer

  1. Prioritize Environmental Certification:
    • Choose products that have passed the China Environmental Label (Ten-Ring Certification) to ensure that the volatile organic compound (VOC) content meets standards and reduces indoor air pollution.
    • Water-based primers use water as a diluent, offering better environmental protection, but are usually 30%-50% more expensive than oil-based primers; oil-based primers have lower costs but stronger odors, requiring good ventilation in the construction environment.
  2. Functional Suitability:
    • Hiding Power: If the wood of the office chair has significant color differences or requires covering old paint, choose primers with strong hiding power (such as white or gray primers).
    • Anti-Mold Function: For humid southern regions, it is recommended to select primers with added anti-mold agents to prevent mold growth after long-term use.
    • Transparency: If you need to retain the wood grain, choose transparent primers (such as PU ultra-clear transparent primers), but ensure that the wood surface is smoothly treated.
  3. Cost and Brand:
    • Refer to market prices; the price range of PU furniture primers (including those suitable for office chairs) is from 14.8 yuan to 40 yuan per kilogram, varying with brand, specification, and function.
    • Well-known brands (such as Nippon Paint and Dulux) offer more stable product quality, but cost-effective products from small and medium-sized brands can also be verified for performance through test reports.

III. Construction Precautions

  1. Thoroughly clean the wood surface before construction to remove dust, oil, and burrs.
  2. Mix the primer according to the instructions on the manual to avoid affecting the effect due to excessive thickness or thinness.
  3. Allow sufficient drying time (usually more than 24 hours) after painting before applying the topcoat to ensure interlayer adhesion.

By reasonably selecting the type of primer and following standard construction practices, the painting quality and service life of office chairs can be significantly improved.
