Office Chair Pressing Not Moving
Admin October 16, 2026
The inability to press an office chair may be caused by a stuck backrest pressing handle or a malfunction in the chair's height adjustment feature, requiring troubleshooting based on specific symptoms.

Common Causes and Solutions for a Stuck Backrest Pressing Handle
Locking Mechanism Not Released
If the handle offers extreme resistance or no response, it may be due to accidentally pressing the side auxiliary locking button (commonly found under the armrest or on the right side of the seat). Use a flashlight to observe the black plastic lock at the connection between the backrest and the base. If it is deeply recessed (in locking mode), release the lock; if the tenon protrudes, the system is unlocked and can be adjusted directly.Structural Jamming
- Foreign Object Blockage: Small items like paper clips or food crumbs may have fallen into the adjustment mechanism, preventing the gears from engaging. Use a vacuum cleaner to clean the gaps around the handle or remove the base cover (secured with three cross-head screws) to retrieve the foreign objects.
- Dust Hardening: Accumulated dust and hair between the metal shaft and plastic catch can form hard lumps, or the locking device may rust. Dip a cotton swab in a small amount of WD-40 rust remover and apply it to the shaft, pressing repeatedly 10-15 times to restore smoothness, avoiding liquid penetration into the seat surface.
Component Aging
- Spring Failure: Springs lose elasticity under prolonged pressure. If the rebound force is weak after pressing 3-5 times, contact after-sales service to replace the original spring; if the handle feels soft and fails to move the backrest, it is likely due to fatigue failure of the connecting spring.
- Handle Breakage: Plastic handles are prone to cracking in cold environments, resulting in a โhollow pressโ feeling when pressed; if the internal connecting rod breaks or the metal thread strips, the handle will spin freely. Replace the handle or repair the connecting rod.
Design Issues with Specific Models
- For the Okamura Contessa II series, where the gear plate engagement is too tight, use a hairdryer on medium heat to warm the bottom of the handle for 30 seconds (avoiding the gas lift) to temporarily release the jam using thermal expansion.
- For models like the Sihoo V1 and Ergohuman, the backrest automatically locks when reclined beyond 135 degrees. Fully return the backrest to the upright position until you hear a โclickโ unlocking sound before adjusting.
Common Causes and Solutions for Height Adjustment Malfunctions
- Control Handle Displacement: The control handle has become detached from the gas lift pin, preventing the switch from being triggered. Invert the seat to check if the end of the handle touches the metal pin at the top of the gas lift. If misaligned, use a wrench to adjust the position of the base fixing screws.
- Gas Lift Pressure Loss: Internal nitrogen leakage or aging of the seal has reduced lifting force. Contact the manufacturer to replace the gas lift; do not disassemble it yourself.
- Mechanical Interference: Accumulated grease or dust in the base obstructs the rebound of the pin. Spray a small amount of WD-40 or sewing machine oil into the gap around the pin and press the handle repeatedly until smooth. If the handle presses all the way down but still does not reach the pin, attach a coin or plastic piece above the pin to compensate for wear gaps.
