Office Chair Posture Stretching

Admin October 16, 2026

Stretching exercises that can be done while sitting in an office chair can effectively relieve fatigue from prolonged sitting and promote blood circulation. Here are the specific exercises and their key points:

Hip Stretch: This exercise relaxes the hip muscles and improves hip stiffness caused by prolonged sitting. Sit on the edge of the chair with your feet hip-width apart. Cross one ankle over the opposite knee and slowly press your back forward and downward, feeling your chest and abdomen gradually press against your calf and knee. Hold for 15 - 30 seconds and then switch sides. Maintain even breathing throughout the exercise and avoid excessive force to prevent strains.

Lower Back Release: This helps relieve tension in the lower back muscles and reduces pressure on the waist. Rotate your body to the side on the chair and use the arm closest to the chair back to support it. Gently twist the front part of your body towards the chair back while extending the other arm towards the opposite knee as far as possible. Hold for 15 - 30 seconds and then switch sides. Twist slowly and feel the stretch in your lower back muscles.

Shoulder Opening Exercises: These improve blood circulation in the shoulders and enhance shoulder flexibility. Sit up straight on the edge of the chair, place one arm to the side, straighten your back, and raise the other arm with the palm facing inward over your head, tilting towards the opposite side to feel the stretch in your shoulder muscles. Alternatively, extend both arms backward, grasp the outer edges of the chair back, and push your chest forward. Hold for 15 - 30 seconds and then switch sides.

Neck and Shoulder Stretches:

  • Wrist Stretch: Extend your right arm with the palm facing up. Use your left hand to gently pull your fingers downward and backward, feeling the stretch in your wrist and forearm. Hold for 15 - 30 seconds and then switch hands and repeat.
  • Shoulder Stretch: Straighten your arms, cross your fingers, and turn your palms outward. Gently raise both arms over your head, stretch your body, and feel the stretch in your shoulders and upper back. Hold for 15 - 30 seconds.

Half Downward Dog Pose: This stretches the back and the back of the leg muscles. Stand facing the chair back, place your hands on the chair back, step back as far as possible with both feet, press your back downward while keeping your arms and legs straight, and feel the stretch in the back of your body. Hold for 15 - 30 seconds.
