Office Chair Placement Tips

Admin October 10, 2026

The following points should be followed for office chair placement to create an efficient, comfortable, and ergonomic office environment:

  1. Avoid Distractions
Office chairs should not face the door or windows directly to reduce interference from external noise, light, and pedestrian traffic. Ensure there is no crossing of movement paths directly in front of the seat to prevent concentration disruption caused by frequent entry and exit. If unavoidable, use screens or plants for visual buffering.

  2. Optimize Spatial Layout
Avoid having two people face each other directly in front of their seats, as this can create psychological pressure. It is recommended to use potted plants, filing cabinets, or low partitions to divide the space, maintaining transparency while preserving privacy. Additionally, seats should avoid asymmetrical aisles or being cut off by other seats to prevent spatial energy disruption that affects team collaboration atmosphere.

  3. Follow Hierarchical Principles
The farther the seat is from the door, the stronger the privacy and authority. Senior managers should be placed at the back of the office, with ordinary employees arranged in order of seniority moving backward. Avoid placing seats directly by the door to reduce external interference and enhance work efficiency.

  4. Ensure a Stable 'Backing'
The back of the office chair should be firmly against a solid wall, symbolizing career support. Avoid placing it against water (such as fish tanks), windows, or toilets, as water is fluid, windows can leak energy, and toilets are unclean, all of which may weaken stability. If unable to be against a wall, compensate with a high-backed chair or low cabinet, but avoid having an empty space behind.

  5. Adhere to Ergonomic Design

    • Back Support: The chair must have a backrest to support the lumbar spine and reduce fatigue from prolonged sitting.
    • Chair-Desk Distance: When arms hang naturally, elbows should easily reach the edge of the desk to avoid leaning forward or shrugging.
    • Height Adjustment: The seat height should allow feet to rest flat on the ground with knees bent at 90 degrees to prevent spinal misalignment from crossing legs.
    • Rotation Space: Reserve enough space for the chair to rotate freely, avoiding collisions with filing cabinets or plants; in small offices, choose chairs with lockable directions to reduce accidental movement risks.
  6. Stay Away from Electromagnetic Radiation Sources
Seats should be kept at least 1 meter away from large electrical appliances (such as copiers and fax machines) to reduce electromagnetic exposure. If space is limited, place plants or metal partitions between the appliances and seats to partially absorb radiation and improve air quality.

Through scientific layout, office chair placement can not only enhance work efficiency but also maintain physical and mental health, requiring optimization based on spatial functionality, ergonomics, and Feng Shui principles.
