Office Chair Pillow Modification

Admin October 14, 2026

Office chair pillow modification can be achieved by adding a headrest, modifying an existing headrest, or creatively transforming old pillows. Here are the specific methods:

1. Adding a Headrest: Suitable for Office Chairs Without Headrests If an office chair originally lacks a headrest, adding one can enhance neck support. There are two common methods:

  • Drilling Installation: Use power tools (such as a screwdriver or drill bit) to drill holes at the top of the chair back, and then use pre-embedded nuts and hexagonal screwdrivers to fix the headrest bracket. This method offers high stability and is suitable for long-term use, but ensure that the material of the chair back is suitable for drilling (such as metal or hard plastic). For example, a customer used this method to modify 11 office chairs without headrests, allowing the headrest height and angle to be adjusted to fit users of different heights.
  • Non-Drilling Installation: Choose simple headrest accessories available on the market and fix them at the top of the chair back using elastic straps or buckles. These headrests are usually made of memory foam, support height adjustment, and fit chair backs of different thicknesses (such as 10-15cm). They are easy to install and do not require damaging the chair structure.

2. Modifying an Existing Headrest: Optimizing Support Angle If a headrest exists but has an unreasonable design (such as an angle with the chair back causing the cervical spine to hang in the air), its support can be improved by adjusting the structure. For example, in the modification case of the ErgoHuman Elite headrest, the user disassembled the headrest components and readjusted the bracket angle so that the headrest and the chair back were on the same plane, eliminating cervical pressure points. When making such modifications, note the following:

  • Structural Safety: Avoid damaging the core support structure of the headrest (such as the metal frame), as this may reduce stability.
  • Material Compatibility: If you need to replace the filling (such as replacing ordinary sponge with memory foam), ensure that the new material matches the size of the original headrest.

3. Creative Transformation of Old Pillows: Low-Cost Temporary Solution If you lack professional tools or a budget, you can use old pillow cores to make simple supports:

  • Chair Back Support Pad: Cut the pillow core into a shape that fits the chair back, wrap it with fabric, and fix it at the middle and lower part of the chair back to serve as a lumbar pad.
  • Temporary Headrest: If the pillow core is tall enough, you can fix it at the top of the chair back with straps, but ensure it is firmly fixed to prevent sliding. Such solutions are suitable for short-term use, and their long-term support effect may be weaker than that of dedicated headrests.

Precautions: Before modification, evaluate the structural strength of the chair to avoid deformation of the chair back due to the addition of accessories. If power tools are involved in the operation, it is recommended to wear goggles and gloves to ensure safety.
