Office Chair Physical Lifting

Admin October 11, 2026

The physical lifting of office chairs is primarily achieved through gas lift cylinders, with the core principle being the use of pressure differences inside and outside the cylinder to support and adjust the seat height.

The gas lift cylinder is a crucial component for the lifting function of office chairs, consisting of an internal cylinder and a piston rod. One end of the cylinder is connected to the bottom of the seat, while the other end is fixed to the top of the chair base housing. A small push valve is located at the top, controlled by a height adjustment lever. When the piston is outside the cylinder, the atmospheric pressure inside and outside the cylinder is equal, and the seat is in its initial state.

When raising the seat, the piston is pushed upward, compressing the air inside the cylinder and gradually increasing the internal pressure to be higher than the external atmospheric pressure, creating a pressure difference. This pressure difference can support the weight of the human body, keeping the seat at the corresponding height. For example, when a person sits on the chair and adjusts the height upward, this is achieved through this method.

When adjusting the seat height downward, the small push valve is controlled to release some of the gas inside the cylinder, reducing the internal pressure. When the internal pressure is lower than the external pressure or reaches equilibrium with the external pressure, the piston moves downward under the weight of the human body, and the seat descends accordingly.

However, when the piston reaches the top of the cylinder, the cylinder may lose sufficient pressure support. At this point, it is necessary to reintroduce gas using an external cylinder filled with compressed nitrogen to maintain the normal function of the gas lift cylinder. Compressed nitrogen has the advantages of good stability and low leakage, ensuring the long-term stable operation of the gas lift cylinder.

Taking the Jingdong Jingzao Z5 Pro ergonomic office chair as an example, it uses a Class 4 gas lift rod for safe lifting. Class 4 gas lift rods generally offer higher safety and stability, capable of withstanding greater pressure and weight, providing users with a more reliable user experience.
