Partial Tests of Office Chairs

Admin October 11, 2026

Partial tests of office chairs mainly include two categories: EN1335 tests and tests based on user groups.

EN1335 Tests

  • Ergonomic Dimension Verification: Standard dummies are used to simulate real human sitting postures and weights, calibrating parameters such as seat cushion depth, seat surface height, backrest support angle, and armrest spacing to ensure compliance with ergonomic principles and prevent lumbar and neck strain from prolonged sitting.
  • Comprehensive Stability Testing: Simulates the risk of tipping over in different usage scenarios, such as forward, backward, and lateral stability, ensuring the chair does not tip over or collapse during normal use.
  • Strength and Durability Testing: Includes tests such as seat surface static pressure testing and backrest cyclic durability testing to verify the load-bearing capacity of the seat cushion and the durability of the backrest.
  • Static Load Capacity Testing: The seat must withstand a vertical pressure of 120 kilograms for 60 seconds, and the backrest must withstand a backward pull at a 45-degree angle to verify the weld strength at the connection between the seat and backrest and the bending resistance of the chair leg base.
  • Stability Testing (Further Details): When simulating the force applied by the user, the chair's tilt angle must not exceed the design critical value. For office chairs with casters, the locking function of the casters under horizontal thrust must also be tested.
  • Structural Durability Testing (Further Details): The seat must withstand 100,000 vertical pulse loads, and the backrest must complete 50,000 backward tilting cycles. After testing, all moving parts must remain fully functional, and the seat height settlement must not exceed 15 millimeters.
  • Special Test Items: For office chairs with rotating or reclining functions, the rotating mechanism must withstand 20,000 cyclic rotations to verify the wear resistance of the bearings and seals. For the reclining function, the relative displacement between the seat cushion and backrest must be less than 8 millimeters.

Tests Based on User Groups

  • Testing Standards: Three individuals participate in the tests, with heights of 160, 175, and 183 cm, and weights ranging from 50 kg to 90 kg. Each person sits on each chair for at least three working days, recording physical sensations at four time points, focusing on three indicators: the decay curve of lumbar support, the onset time of seat cushion pressure, and the position of support breakpoints during reclining.
  • Testing for Different User Groups: Tests are conducted for different user groups, such as small-bodied/upright office workers, medium-to-large-bodied/multi-scenario switchers, and individuals with specific lumbar care needs, focusing on the problems and needs they may encounter when using office chairs.
