Office Chair Overview

Admin October 08, 2026

Office chairs are chairs equipped for the convenience of work in daily work and social activities. There are various classification methods, and different types differ in functions, designs, fabrics, etc..

From the perspective of conceptual scope, OfficeMate categorizes office chairs into narrow and broad definitions. The narrow definition refers to the backrest chairs used by people when sitting at a desk for work. The broad definition encompasses all chairs used in offices, including executive chairs and staff chairs. Computer chairs, designed specifically for office and study scenarios, are a type of office chair. They are designed with ergonomics to alleviate fatigue from prolonged sitting and are mainly classified into work chairs, student chairs, and mid-back chairs.

From a functional standpoint, computer chairs can be divided into ordinary computer chairs and ergonomic computer chairs. Ordinary computer chairs typically only meet the needs of ordinary users for short-term internet use. Ergonomic computer chairs adopt ergonomic designs, aiming to fit the natural form of the human body as much as possible and reduce fatigue caused by using tools. They need to meet conditions such as adjustable headrests, liftable armrests, backrests that can fit the back, height adjustment functions, seat cushions customized for different user groups, thickened explosion-proof steel plates, and air pressure rods certified by SGS international standards.

In terms of usage scenarios and design features, office chairs also include conference chairs and chess and card chairs. Conference chairs have a novel and fashionable appearance, but comfort is not the primary consideration for designers. Chess and card chairs are simple and convenient, with comfort being the top priority.

Regarding fabrics, different types of office chairs also have different choices. Hemp chairs are mostly used for work chairs, staff chairs, and mid-back chairs. Mesh chairs have strong breathability, are suitable for prolonged sitting, and are now widely used for staff chairs. Leather chairs are mostly used for executive chairs and come in genuine and faux leather varieties. Additionally, there are anti-static chairs and rubber band chairs.

Guangdong Shunde in China and Anji in Zhejiang are the main production bases for computer chairs. Product manufacturing needs to pass certification tests for chair frame strength, sponge density, and air pressure rods to ensure product quality and safety.
