Origin of Office Chairs in Anji, Zhejiang

Admin October 22, 2026

The main production area for office chairs, especially swivel office chairs, is concentrated in Anji County, Zhejiang Province, China.

Since 2000, Anji County has promoted the development of the office chair industry through the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) model, gradually forming the world's largest production base. It is known as the "Hometown of Chairs in China" and the "Capital of Chairs in the World". Behind this title lies its massive industrial cluster effect: Anji County has gathered thousands of chair-related enterprises, covering the entire industrial chain from raw material supply, component manufacturing, finished product assembly, to logistics support, forming a highly specialized division of labor system. This industrial agglomeration not only reduces production costs but also enhances overall competitiveness through technology sharing and economies of scale.

In terms of production volume, Anji's chair industry holds a significant advantage in the domestic market. Its annual output accounts for one-third of the total national office chair production, meaning that one out of every three office chairs in China is produced in Anji. In the export sector, Anji's global influence is even more prominent: its export volume accounts for more than 50% of the total national office chair exports, with products shipped to over 120 countries and regions, including Europe, the United States, Japan, and South Korea. A more intuitive comparison is that one out of every three swivel chairs in the world comes from Anji, highlighting its core position in the international market.

The rise of Anji's office chair industry is related to multiple factors. First, policy support: The local government has attracted enterprises to gather and promoted technological upgrades through measures such as building industrial parks and providing tax incentives. Second, cost advantages: The well-established industrial chain enables enterprises to obtain raw materials and components at lower costs, while large-scale production further reduces costs. Third, technological accumulation: After more than 20 years of development, Anji enterprises have mastered core patents such as ergonomic design and pneumatic rod safety technology, with product quality meeting international standards. Fourth, brand effects: After accumulating experience through OEM, some enterprises have gradually established their own brands, such as Yongyi and Henglin, further enhancing the industrial added value.

Today, Anji is not only the physical production area for office chairs but also a trendsetter for global chair innovation. Its industrial model provides a typical case for the transformation and upgrading of traditional manufacturing industries and continues to consolidate China's leading position in the global office chair market.
