Office Chair Only Adjusts Upwards

Admin October 14, 2026

If your office chair can only be adjusted upwards and not downwards, you can try the following solutions:

1. Confirm the chair type and adjustment method
First, identify the type of height-adjustment mechanism your chair uses. Some chairs are adjusted using a control lever; you need to sit on the chair, pull the lever or handle downwards, and use your body weight to lower the chair, then release it to lock the height. If your chair uses a knob for adjustment, turn the knob clockwise or counterclockwise to adjust the height. If the adjustment method is unclear, refer to the user manual or try each control lever function one by one. Note: The height-adjustment function on some chairs is designed in a concealed manner; carefully check the control components beneath or on the side of the seat to avoid misjudging it as "unable to be lowered" due to improper operation.

2. Replace the gas cylinder (for fixed-height chairs)
If your chair has no other adjustment mechanisms, it may be that the gas cylinder is stuck or damaged internally, causing the height to be fixed. In this case, you need to replace the gas cylinder. The steps are as follows:

  • Remove the old gas cylinder: Turn the chair upside down, use a slender tool (such as a small flat-head screwdriver or a ballpoint pen refill) to press the retaining clip (C-shaped spring) inside the base, and at the same time, pull the gas cylinder upwards. If the retaining clip is too tight, apply some cooking oil to lubricate the connection, wait for 20 minutes to 2 hours, then gently tap the connection with a hammer until a small gap appears, and then pull it out. Do not use hammering, prying, or heating methods to forcefully remove it to avoid damaging the base or the gas cylinder and causing safety hazards.
  • Install the new gas cylinder: Align the new gas cylinder with the hole in the base and insert it vertically to ensure it is fully secured.
  • Choose the right gas cylinder: Give priority to purchasing safe and reliable products, such as the carbon-black inner rod from the South Korean SHS brand, which has good load-bearing performance and is reasonably priced. Select a matching specification according to the chair model and the user's weight to avoid further damage due to insufficient load-bearing capacity of the gas cylinder.

3. Adjust the chair feet (temporary solution)
If your chair has no adjustment function and you cannot replace the gas cylinder, you can place stable materials such as wooden boards or rubber pads (it is recommended that the thickness does not exceed 5cm) under the chair feet to slightly adjust the height. Note: The padding should be flat and non-slip to avoid the chair tipping over due to uneven height. Especially ensure that the chair feet are in stable contact with the ground to ensure safety during use.
