Office Chair Often Makes Noise

Admin October 09, 2026

The frequent noise from an office chair can be caused by various factors and can be resolved through targeted measures.

  1. Loose Connecting Components
The screws at the connection points of the backrest, armrests, base, and chair legs may loosen due to prolonged stress or frequent movement, causing friction between components and resulting in noise. Solution: Invert the chair, use a screwdriver to tighten all loose screws, and apply a small amount of lubricant (such as sewing machine oil or light mechanical lubricant) to the metal pivot points and gaps to reduce friction.

  2. Dry Base Pivot or Gas Cylinder
Chairs with a rocking or reclining function may experience metal friction noise at the connection points between the internal metal springs, pivots, or gas cylinders and the five-star base due to dried-out lubricant. Solution: Apply specialized lubricant to the contact points of the pivots, springs, and top of the gas cylinder, and regularly inspect the wear between the gas cylinder and the five-star base, replacing components if the gap is too large.

  3. Caster Issues

    • Dust or Foreign Objects Lodged: Hair, fibers, or other debris wrapped around the wheel axles, or dust and sand particles lodged in the bearing gaps, can cause rolling resistance and noise. Solution: Use tweezers or a small brush to remove debris from the wheel axles, wipe the wheel surfaces with a damp cloth, and spray a small amount of lubricant to maintain the bearings.
    • Material Aging or Loose Installation: Cheap hard plastic wheels or aged rubber wheels may produce friction noise against the floor, or the wheel installation interface may not match in size, causing wobbling. Solution: Replace with silent rubber wheels and check that the wheels are securely installed on the chair base, reinstalling if necessary.
  4. Aging Plastic Frame Components
The thin plastic frame of low-cost chairs may deform under prolonged sitting pressure, causing structural compression and noise. Solution: Such issues are often difficult to fully repair; if the noise is severe, consider replacing the chair or contacting after-sales service for repair.

  5. Structural Adjustment and Daily Maintenance

    • Adjust the angle and tightness of the backrest and seat cushion to avoid excessive friction between components.
    • Regularly clean the chair to prevent dust and debris from entering and causing wear.
    • Avoid using the chair when it is not fully assembled or when components are loose to prevent noise from worsening.

If the above methods do not resolve the issue, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician to inspect the internal structure of the chair or replace key components (such as the gas cylinder or base) to ensure safety and comfort during use.
