Office Chair Odor Removal
Admin October 10, 2026
To remove odors from an office chair, first identify the source, then choose a quick emergency response, deep cleaning, or other auxiliary methods based on the situation.

I. Identifying the Source of the Odor
The odor from a computer chair may not necessarily be formaldehyde (which only irritates the eyes at high concentrations). If the odor persists after cleaning, it may be due to mold growth caused by incomplete drying of internal moisture, resulting in stubborn mildew odors from mold metabolites, or chemical odors from cleaning agent residues.
II. Quick Emergency Odor Removal Methods (Effective on the Same Day)
- Strong Ventilation: Move the chair to a well-ventilated area such as a balcony or near a window, and open doors and windows to create airflow. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight for fabric or mesh materials, but allow short periods of sunlight to accelerate the volatilization of odor molecules.
- Activated Carbon/Bamboo Charcoal Adsorption: Place activated carbon packs around, beneath, or on the seat of the chair to utilize their porous structure to adsorb odor molecules, formaldehyde, and moisture.
- White Vinegar Solution Wiping: Dilute white vinegar with water in a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio, dip a soft cloth into the solution, wring it out until semi-dry, and wipe the surface of the seat (avoid allowing liquid to penetrate the interior). Acetic acid can neutralize alkaline odors and inhibit bacteria. After wiping, use a clean cloth dampened with water to wipe again and open windows for ventilation.
- Using Professional Odor Removers: Choose car interior odor removal sprays or fabric disinfectant and odor removers. Test on an inconspicuous area first to ensure no damage or staining occurs, then spray according to the instructions.
III. Deep Cleaning and Deodorization (For Stubborn Odors or Obvious Stains and Mildew)
- Preparation: Prepare a vacuum cleaner, soft brush, clean cloth, and specialized fabric cleaner, neutral laundry detergent, or soapy water.
- Thorough Vacuuming: Use a vacuum cleaner to comprehensively clean dust, hair, and debris from the seat, backrest, armrests, and crevices. For mesh chairs, gently tap the edges to dislodge dust.
- Cleaning Stains and Mildew: Wipe ordinary stains with diluted cleaning solution or soapy water; for mildew or stubborn stains, use specialized mildew remover or strong cleaner, spray, and gently brush with a soft brush, allowing it to sit for half an hour to decompose mildew.
- Removing Residues: After cleaning, thoroughly remove residues to prevent secondary pollution.
IV. Other Auxiliary Methods
- Plant Absorption Method: Plants such as cacti, spider plants, and aloe vera can assist in absorbing harmful substances like formaldehyde, but their effect is limited and should not be solely relied upon for odor removal.
- Folk Remedies: Tea leaves and pomelo peels can temporarily mask odors, but their effectiveness in absorbing harmful substances is limited and should be combined with other methods.
- Ventilation: Place new chairs in a well-ventilated area and open windows to accelerate the dissipation of odors, which is the simplest and most economical method.
- Air Purifiers: Choose air purifiers with formaldehyde and odor removal functions, paying attention to their purification effectiveness and applicable area.
