Office Chair Odor Prevention
Admin October 09, 2026
Office chair odor prevention can be achieved by addressing the sources of odors and performing regular maintenance. Here are the specific methods:

I. Dealing with the pungent smell of new leather office chairs The odor of new leather office chairs mainly comes from the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by materials (such as leather and sponge) and the manufacturing process.
- Ventilation treatment: Place the chair in a well-ventilated area (such as on a balcony or by a window), keep the air circulating, and the odor can be significantly reduced after about 1 week.
- Activated carbon adsorption: Place activated carbon bags near the chair. Utilize their porous structure to adsorb organic compounds. Replace them every 2 - 3 weeks to maintain the effect.
- Assistance from natural materials: Place orange peels, green tea leaves, or use charcoal bags and deodorizers. Neutralize the odor through natural ingredients or chemical adsorption.
II. Dealing with sweat and musty odors from long-term use After long-term use, sweat and a humid environment can easily breed bacteria, leading to odors. Follow the three steps of "ventilation and airing - adsorption and purification - neutralization and cleaning":
- Ventilation and airing: Open the windows for ventilation and move the chair to the sun for moderate airing (avoid exposing it to the sun for more than 2 hours). Use ultraviolet rays to kill bacteria and remove odors, and prevent the leather or fabric from fading and hardening.
- Adsorption and purification: Sprinkle baking soda powder on the seat cushion or around it, or place activated carbon bags. Let them sit for 6 - 12 hours to adsorb odor molecules, and then clean up the residues.
- Neutralization and cleaning: Wipe the surface with diluted white vinegar water (in a ratio of 1:5) to neutralize the acidic sweat odor and inhibit bacteria. After wiping, use a damp cloth to remove the residual vinegar smell and ensure thorough air-drying.
III. General odor prevention and maintenance methods
- Daily ventilation: Keep the indoor air circulating to reduce the accumulation of odors. You can use air fresheners to briefly mask the odor (choose low-irritant products).
- Plant regulation: Place plants such as devil's ivy and spider plants. Absorb some organic compounds through photosynthesis to assist in air purification.
- Fabric cover cleaning: Washable fabric covers can be washed with water or hot water allowed by the instructions in a washing machine. For non-removable fabric chairs, first use a vacuum cleaner to clean the dust. Gently wipe the stains with a neutral detergent or a special cleaner. For stubborn odors, wipe with a small amount of white vinegar added to water. In case of severe pollution, use a fabric cleaner for deep cleaning and then thoroughly air-dry.
