Why Office Chairs Don't Feel Warm

Admin October 08, 2026

The lack of warmth in office chairs is mainly related to factors such as room temperature, wind strength, material, design, and cushion type. Here are the specific reasons:

When the room temperature is low, the heat generated by the body is not easily transferred to the chair. During normal activities, the human body continuously generates heat, which is transferred to objects in contact through thermal conduction. However, when the indoor temperature is low, there is a significant temperature difference between the surrounding environment and the body. The heat generated by the body is preferentially dissipated into the surrounding air rather than transferred to the office chair. This results in the office chair being unable to absorb enough heat and thus feeling cold.

Strong wind speeds up air circulation and carries away heat. Air movement creates wind, which accelerates the loss of heat from the body's surface. When the wind is strong, the heat in the air is quickly blown away, making it difficult for the air temperature around the office chair to rise. At the same time, the wind also speeds up the evaporation of sweat on the body's surface, carrying away more heat and further reducing the heat transfer between the body and the office chair, making the chair feel cold.

The thermal insulation properties of the chair material also affect its temperature. Some materials, such as rattan chairs and wooden chairs, have good thermal insulation properties. These materials have low thermal conductivity and can effectively prevent the heat generated by the body from being transferred to the chair. When a person sits on such a chair, the thermal conduction between the body and the chair is hindered, and the chair cannot absorb enough heat, so it feels cold.

The breathable hole design on the seat cushion and backrest of office chairs increases air circulation. Many office chairs are designed with breathable holes on the seat cushion and backrest, which effectively increase air circulation. When used in summer, air can flow freely through these holes, carrying away heat and moisture from the body's surface, keeping the back and buttocks dry. This design not only improves comfort but also reduces the accumulation of heat between the body and the chair, making the office chair feel cold.

Using soft and cool cushions can also keep office chairs from feeling warm. Some cushions use silicone materials or mesh structures underneath, which have good breathability and heat dissipation properties. When a person sits on such a cushion, air can flow freely inside the cushion, carrying away the heat generated by the body and keeping the cushion cool. Therefore, even after long-term use, it will not feel hot and may even have a cool sensation.
