Office Chair Not Rising
The main reason an office chair fails to rise is due to a malfunctioning gas lift rod, which can be resolved through troubleshooting and replacement, without the need for immediate disposal.

Root Causes
Over 90% of issues with office chairs not rising stem from a malfunctioning gas lift rod (pneumatic rod). Internal causes include: worn or aged seals leading to poor airtightness, preventing the internal pressure from supporting body weight; nitrogen leakage resulting in insufficient pressure; and blockages caused by impurities. Additionally, collisions during transportation of new chairs may lock the gas lift rod at its lowest position. Secondary causes include: stuck or damaged levers or knobs controlling the height adjustment; loose or broken connections between the five-star base or chassis; and damaged internal mechanical springs.
Troubleshooting Methods
- Operational Test: Repeatedly press and rotate the height adjustment button/lever to feel for any sticking or complete lack of resistance. If sticking occurs, it may indicate a fault in the lever or internal mechanical structure; if there is no resistance, it may suggest a gas leak or blockage in the gas lift rod.
- Sound Judgment: Attempt to adjust the height and listen for any abnormal hissing sounds (indicating nitrogen leakage or seal damage) or metal grinding sounds (possibly due to internal blockages or worn mechanical parts).
- Structural Inspection: Check for noticeable wobbling or unusual noises at the connection points between the chair base (five-star base) and the underside of the seat cushion. Wobbling may indicate loose or broken connections; unusual noises may suggest wear at the connection points between the gas lift rod and the chassis or seat cushion.
Replacement Steps
- Removing the Old Gas Lift Rod: Invert the chair onto a spacious, flat, and stable surface; if the chair can barely rise, try to raise it to its maximum height; use a rubber mallet to evenly and lightly tap the connection points between the bottom of the gas lift rod and the chassis steel ring, then tap around the top connection with the seat base plate, using vibrations to loosen the two parts.
- Purchasing a New Gas Lift Rod: Search for "computer chair gas lift rod" or "office chair gas cylinder" on e-commerce platforms. Choose a product with universal dimensions, safety certifications (such as compliance with the national GB/T 2280 standard and a "Level 4 certification" mark), and an appropriate weight capacity, typically priced at a few dozen yuan.
- Installing the New Gas Lift Rod: Insert the new gas lift rod directly into the center hole of the base, ensuring it is fully seated; align the seat cushion with the top of the gas lift rod and press down firmly and vertically until you hear a "click" sound or feel a tight fit, indicating the installation is complete.
