Office Chair Not Reclining

Admin October 10, 2026

An office chair may not recline due to reasons such as an inactive adjustment lever, an enabled tilt lock, excessive tension settings, or stuck components.

  1. Inactive Adjustment Lever or Knob
    The recline function of most office chairs is activated through a side handle, knob, or bottom lever. If the adjustment component is not pulled or rotated, the backrest will remain locked. For example, some chairs require the bottom lever to be pulled up and leaned back to unlock the tilt function. If this operation is not performed, the chair will not recline.

  2. Tilt Lock Function Enabled
    Some chairs are equipped with a 'lock tilt angle' button (usually located near the adjustment lever). If this function is enabled, the chair will be fixed at the current angle and cannot recline backward. In this case, check the lock switch on the side or bottom of the chair and turn it off to restore the tilt function.

  3. Excessive Tension Settings
    Chairs with tension adjustment (controlled by a knob or dial) may require more force to recline if the tension is set too high. Lightweight individuals may mistakenly think the chair is malfunctioning due to insufficient strength. In this case, try rotating the tension adjustment knob clockwise (counterclockwise for some chairs) to reduce resistance, or ask someone else to assist in testing whether normal function is restored.

  4. Stuck Components
    Dust accumulation or insufficient lubrication in the adjustment lever spring or pivot can cause mechanical sticking. For example, after prolonged use, the pivot may not rotate smoothly due to dust buildup or dried lubricant. In this case, use a dry cloth to clean the adjustment lever and pivot area, and spray a small amount of specialized lubricant (such as WD-40). Repeatedly pull the adjustment lever to allow the lubricant to penetrate, which usually restores flexibility.

Troubleshooting Suggestions:

  • First, check whether the adjustment lever is active and confirm that the tilt lock function is not enabled;
  • If the chair has tension adjustment, try reducing the tension value;
  • If the above steps are ineffective, clean and lubricate the key components. If the problem persists, there may be a broken internal spring or worn pivot, requiring professional maintenance personnel to replace the components.
