Aging of Non-Woven Fabric in Office Chairs

Admin October 17, 2026

The aging of non-woven fabric in office chairs is mainly caused by material properties, environmental factors, and usage conditions, and its service life can be extended through preventive and repair measures.

Causes of Aging

  1. Material Properties
    Non-woven fabric is formed by bonding fibers together, and its wear resistance and tensile strength are weaker than those of woven fabrics, making it prone to damage from physical friction. The molecular chain structures of its raw materials (such as polypropylene and polyester) are unstable, with numerous active sites at the nanoscale, which can easily react with environmental factors to accelerate aging. Production defects (such as uneven fiber arrangement or insufficient reinforcement) can further weaken local strength.
  2. Environmental Factors
    • Photo-oxidative Aging: Ultraviolet light (with a wavelength of 300nm) can break the molecular chains of polypropylene, triggering photo-oxidative reactions and generating carbonyl compounds that accelerate degradation.
    • Thermal-oxidative Aging: At high temperatures, oxygen attacks the C-H bonds in the molecular chains, forming free radicals and initiating auto-oxidative reactions that lead to material deterioration.
    • Humidity Effects: Long-term exposure to humid environments (humidity > 70%) can reduce the strength of non-woven fabric and cause mildew, while water absorption and swelling can decrease structural strength.
  3. Usage Wear and Tear
    • Mechanical Wear: Frequent pulling, folding, or overloading can damage the bonding force between fibers, leading to crease fractures or bottom tears.
    • Chemical Corrosion: Contact with chemicals (such as solvents in industrial environments) can accelerate hydrolysis reactions.
    • Improper Cleaning: Excessively damp cloths or direct water washing can cause the material to absorb water and swell, affecting structural stability.
    • Adhesive Aging: The adhesives used to fix non-woven fabric (such as EVA hot-melt adhesives) can become hard and brittle in environments with fluctuating temperature and humidity, eventually losing their adhesiveness.

Preventive Measures

  1. Daily Usage Habits
    Avoid scratches from hard objects and keep away from sharp items such as pets and keys; control environmental humidity and avoid direct sunlight and humid environments; regularly rotate the seat cushion to evenly distribute pressure points.
  2. Scientific Cleaning and Maintenance
    Vacuum once a week, using a soft-bristled brush head to gently remove dust along the grain; promptly treat stains with a neutral detergent, testing stubborn stains on an inconspicuous area first; allow to dry naturally after cleaning, avoiding exposure to sunlight or baking.
  3. Material and Storage Optimization
    Prioritize the use of anti-aging materials such as high-density polyester; store in environments that avoid high temperatures, humidity, and pollution; add antioxidants and UV-resistant additives during production to enhance durability.

Repair Methods

If the fabric is aged and detached, it can be replaced by yourself:

  1. Clean the old fabric, removing residual debris and hardened adhesive layers;
  2. Select thickened non-woven fabric or high-density polyester fabric, with dimensions 2 cm larger than the frame for edge wrapping, and recommend using white glue or special repair adhesive;
  3. Apply the adhesive evenly, then attach the new fabric, press firmly, and ensure it is flat and dry.
