Office Chair Non-Rotation

Admin October 11, 2026

If your office chair does not rotate, follow these steps to troubleshoot and repair it:

  1. Check the wheel status
First, observe whether the bottom wheels are stuck by foreign objects such as paper scraps, hair, or threads. These debris can obstruct wheel rotation and should be carefully removed using tweezers or a fine needle. If the wheel surface is severely worn (e.g., cracks, deformation, or unusual noises during rotation), purchase replacement wheels of the appropriate model. Ensure the wheel size matches the mounting holes to avoid installation failure due to size mismatch.

  2. Lubricate the swivel chair shaft
The rotation function of the chair depends on the smooth operation of the central shaft. If the shaft becomes dry due to prolonged use or lack of maintenance, use a syringe or oil pot to inject a small amount of lubricating oil (e.g., sewing machine oil or light mechanical oil) into the shaft. After injection, slowly rotate the chair several times to allow the lubricant to fully penetrate the shaft and reduce friction. Avoid over-oiling to prevent oil spillage that could contaminate the floor or seat.

  3. Tighten connecting components
Check for loose screws, bolts, or other fasteners on various parts of the chair. Focus on the connections between the armrests and seat, the seat and base, and the base and gas lift. If any screws are loose, use the corresponding screwdriver to tighten them to the appropriate torque to avoid stripping due to over-tightening or wobbling due to under-tightening.

  4. Evaluate the gas lift condition
The gas lift is the core component supporting the chair's height adjustment and rotation. If the gas lift is bent, deformed, or leaking (e.g., the chair cannot maintain height or rotation is jerky), contact a professional technician for replacement. Non-professionals attempting to disassemble the gas lift may face safety risks, such as high-pressure gas ejection or component damage.

  5. Adjust the floor environment
The rotation of the chair wheels is significantly affected by floor flatness. If the floor is uneven, cracked, or has excessive friction (e.g., thick carpet), it can impede wheel movement. Move the chair to a smooth, flat hard surface (e.g., tile or wood flooring), or place a hard mat on the carpet to reduce resistance.
