Tips for Reducing Noise from Office Chairs
Admin October 10, 2026
The main tips for reducing noise from office chairs include replacing the chair, lubricating it, checking and tightening screws, adjusting the chair structure, performing regular maintenance, and adding a 'base' to the chair, etc.

- Replacing the Chair: When an office chair has been used for a long time, showing significant wear and tear, or when the noise problem is severe, replacing it with a new chair of good quality and sturdy structure is a relatively direct and effective solution. New chairs are designed and manufactured with higher component compatibility, significantly reducing noise caused by aging and wear of components.
- Lubrication: If replacing the chair is not immediately possible, lubricate the chair. Use cooking oil or professional lubricant, applying a small amount evenly to the parts of the chair that make noise, such as metal joints like hinges and slide rails, avoiding excessive application. If possible, it is recommended to use professional lubricant, which works better and is less likely to cause other problems, such as corroding components or attracting dust.
- Checking and Tightening Screws: Sometimes, noise from the chair is caused by loose screws. Carefully inspect all components of the chair, especially the joints and adjustment parts, and use appropriate tools to ensure all screws are tightened, preventing noise caused by component wobbling due to loose screws.
- Adjusting the Chair Structure: If the chair structure allows, try fine-tuning certain components of the chair. For example, adjust the angle and tightness between the backrest and seat cushion to reduce noise caused by friction or looseness. During adjustment, be mindful of applying moderate force to avoid damaging the chair through excessive adjustment.
- Regular Maintenance: Regular cleaning and maintenance of the chair are crucial. Dust and debris entering the chair can cause wear and tear or unusual noises, so keep the chair clean and avoid dust accumulation. Use a clean cloth to wipe the chair surface, and for hard-to-clean areas, use a small brush or vacuum cleaner for cleaning.
- Adding a 'Base' to the Chair: For swivel chairs or office chairs that make noise when dragged, replace the wheels with silent ones to reduce noise caused by friction between the wheels and the ground. Alternatively, lay a carpet in the office and place the chair on it. The soft rubber on the back of the carpet has adhesive properties, leaving no marks, and after laying, use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust. The carpet will not slide, making cleaning easy, and dragging the chair will be like turning on silent mode. Additionally, adding pads to the chair legs can also effectively reduce noise when dragging the chair.
