Noise Reduction for Office Chairs

Admin October 11, 2026

Noise reduction for office chairs can be achieved by taking the following measures for the casters and the chair as a whole:

For Caster Chairs

  • Deep Cleaning: The casters are prone to getting tangled with hair, fiber threads, and other foreign objects. Additionally, dust and sand particles can get stuck in the bearing gaps, causing the casters to rotate poorly and generate noise. For tightly tangled foreign objects, the casters can be removed for cleaning. If the tangling is only on the surface, use small tweezers or a hook to remove them, or utilize static electricity to attract and remove the debris.
  • Lubrication Maintenance: If there is still abnormal noise after cleaning, especially a dry metallic friction sound during rotation, it indicates a lack of lubrication in the axle and bearings. In this case, use a clean cloth to dip a small amount of sewing machine oil, light mechanical lubricating oil, or specialized office chair maintenance oil, and apply it to the gaps between the axle and bearings. Then, rotate the wheels to evenly distribute the oil, and finally wipe off any excess oil. Before lubrication, be sure to clean the dust on the axle to prevent it from mixing into the oil and exacerbating wear.
  • Tightening Inspection: Turn the chair upside down and check if the connections between the five-star base and the casters are loose, as well as the connections of other parts of the chair such as the backrest and armrests. Confirm by pressing; if any looseness is found, use appropriate tools to tighten the screws and nuts. If the screws are severely worn, they should be replaced promptly.
  • Caster Replacement: If the casters are severely worn, they will increase friction with the ground, resulting in significant noise. They can be replaced with silent PU casters, which can effectively reduce friction with the ground and lower noise levels.

For the Office Chair as a Whole

  • Check for Loose Components: Carefully inspect all the connections of the office chair, including the screws and nuts at the joints between the chair legs and the seat, and the armrests and the seat. Use appropriate screwdrivers or wrenches to tighten any loose screws and nuts. If they are severely worn, replace them promptly to ensure that all components are firmly connected.
  • Address Seat Material Issues: If it is a leather seat, regularly use leather conditioner for maintenance to keep the leather soft and elastic, reducing noise caused by leather cracking and friction. If it is a fabric seat, check if the seat fabric is firmly fixed. If it is loose, re-fix it. You can also add soft cushions between the seat frame and the fabric to reduce friction.
  • Handle Pneumatic Rod Failures: If you suspect that a pneumatic rod failure is causing abnormal chair lifting and noise, do not disassemble it yourself. Instead, contact the manufacturer of the office chair or a professional repair technician to inspect and replace the pneumatic rod.
  • Add Adhesive Paper Gaskets: Adding adhesive paper gaskets between the connections and the hole walls can reduce friction and gaps between components, thereby lowering noise levels.
