Noise Reduction for Office Chairs

Admin October 10, 2026

The following measures can be taken to reduce noise from office chairs:

1. Use silent and wear-resistant chair foot pads
Install silent and wear-resistant foot pads at the contact points between the chair and the floor. These pads absorb the sharp sounds generated by friction through a buffer layer, converting them into mild muffled sounds. Such foot pads are usually made of special materials that maintain stable performance over a long period, ensuring a lasting noise reduction effect, especially suitable for hard floors (such as tiles and wooden floors).

2. Replace the chair
If the chair has been in use for a long time or shows obvious signs of wear (such as aging wheels or loose structure), replacing it with a new chair of good quality and a sturdy structure can fundamentally reduce noise. The components of a new chair are more tightly connected, and the materials are more wear-resistant, effectively reducing abnormal sounds caused by loose or worn components.

3. Lubrication treatment
Lubricating the metal connection parts of the chair (such as the rotating shafts and sliding rails) can reduce friction noise.

  • Edible oil or professional lubricating oil: Use a cotton swab to dip a small amount of oil and apply it evenly to the noisy parts, avoiding excessive application that may leave oil stains.
  • Lubricant spraying: Spray a small amount of grease lubricant suitable for mechanical lubrication at the movable joints. This treatment takes a short time and has a significant effect. The noise problem can be immediately alleviated, and the effect can last for more than half a year.

4. Check and tighten screws
The abnormal sounds of a chair may be due to loose screws. Regularly check whether the screws at the connection points of various components (such as the backrest, armrests, and base) are tight. If any are found to be loose, first unscrew them by 2-3 millimeters, wrap them with a face towel or cosmetic cotton pad, and then tighten them again to increase friction and prevent them from loosening again.

5. Adjust the chair structure
According to the design of the chair, slightly adjusting the position of components can reduce sounds caused by friction or looseness. For example:

  • Adjust the angle or tightness between the backrest and the seat cushion to avoid an increase in the gap at the connection points due to long-term use;
  • Check whether the pneumatic rod or lifting mechanism is stuck, and lubricate or replace it if necessary.

6. Daily maintenance
Regularly clean the chair to prevent dust and debris from entering the internal structure (such as the wheels and sliding rails) and causing wear or abnormal sounds. When cleaning, use a soft-bristled brush to clean the gaps and wipe the metal components with a dry cloth to prevent rusting.

7. Other creative methods

  • Wrap cotton ropes: Wrap cotton ropes around the bottom of the chair legs to increase friction and buffer vibrations;
  • Tennis ball foot covers: Cut a tennis ball in half and put it on the end of the chair legs to use the elastic material to reduce noise;
  • Silent foot pads: Clean the chair feet before installation and wrap them around the bottom until fully covered, which can not only prevent slipping but also reduce noise.
