Office Chair No Height Adjustment

Admin October 11, 2026

Over 90% of the failures causing an office chair to lose its height adjustment capability stem from a malfunctioning gas lift cylinder. Here are the specific causes and solutions:

Damaged Gas Lift Cylinder

  • Confirm if the gas lift cylinder is damaged: If the chair cannot be adjusted in height at all, the gas lift cylinder is likely the culprit. In this case, a new gas lift cylinder needs to be installed. Before replacement, ensure that the size and specifications match. Gas lift cylinders are relatively inexpensive, costing around 30 yuan, and can be purchased independently online.
  • Loss of pressure in the gas lift cylinder: Internal nitrogen leakage or aging of the seal ring can lead to insufficient support. If the seal ring is worn or aged, the chair needs to be disassembled to replace the seal ring. Prolonged use may exacerbate seal ring wear, so regular inspections are necessary.

Mechanical Failures

  • Displacement of the control handle: If the control handle detaches from the metal pin at the top of the gas lift cylinder, height adjustment will fail. Reverse the seat and check if the end of the handle touches the pin. If misaligned, use a wrench to adjust the position of the fixing screws on the base so that the handle aligns with the pin.
  • Mechanical interference: Accumulation of grease or dust in the base can hinder the rebound of the pin. Spray a small amount of WD-40 or sewing machine oil into the gap of the pin and press the handle repeatedly several times until the pin moves smoothly.

Other Issues

  • Clean the chair: Dust or debris on the surface or in the crevices may affect the height adjustment function. Use a vacuum cleaner or a clean cloth to wipe, ensuring no foreign objects interfere.
  • Check for air leaks: If the chair slowly sinks, there may be a leak. Inspect the gas lift cylinder, seal ring, or connections and repair the leaking part.
  • Other component failures: A stuck control handle, loose or broken connections on the five-star base or chassis, or a damaged mechanical spring can also cause height adjustment failure. Check each component one by one and contact a professional for repair if necessary.
  • Transport lock: Some new chairs may have the gas lift cylinder locked in the lowest position due to transportation impacts. Try repeatedly pressing the height adjustment handle or gently tapping the bottom of the gas lift cylinder to release the lock.

If none of the above methods work, it is advisable to contact a professional repair technician. When replacing the gas lift cylinder, place the chair upside down on a stable surface. If the chair can barely rise, try to raise it to the maximum height, then gently tap the connection between the bottom of the gas lift cylinder and the base, as well as the connection between the top and the seat cushion, with a rubber mallet to remove the old part. When purchasing a new gas lift cylinder, pay attention to size compatibility, safety certifications (such as SGS or BIFMA certification), and weight capacity (which should match the user's weight). To install, insert the new gas lift cylinder into the center hole of the base, ensuring it is fully inserted, then press the seat cushion vertically until you hear a 'click' sound or feel a tight fit.
