Office Chair Next to Air Conditioner

Admin October 11, 2026

There are health risks and discomfort issues when an office chair is placed next to an air conditioner, and timely improvements are needed.

Health Risks

  1. Muscle and Joint Problems: Direct air from the air conditioner blowing on the back can cause sudden muscle contraction, leading to shoulder pain. Long-term exposure may induce facial paralysis. Among the 900,000 annual cases of facial paralysis nationwide, 30% are caused by direct air conditioning blasts, and the risk is 40% higher in summer compared to other seasons. Cold air blowing directly on the back of the neck can cause sustained spasms and contractions of the cervical blood vessels (such as the vertebral artery), affecting blood supply to the brain. People with high blood viscosity or hypertension may be at risk of acute cerebral infarction (stroke). Direct air on the head can cause severe fluctuations in blood pressure, increasing the risk of cerebral hemorrhage. Cold stimulation can also exacerbate joint pain and stiffness in patients with arthritis.
  2. Respiratory and Immune Problems: Cold air dries out the respiratory mucosa and constricts blood vessels. Poor indoor air circulation can lead to the proliferation of microorganisms, causing a range of symptoms including headaches, dizziness, fatigue, nasal congestion, irritating dry cough, dry and itchy throat, dry skin, and a weakened immune system.
  3. Local Discomfort and Nerve Damage: Direct cold air can cause local muscle tension and impaired blood circulation, triggering or worsening neck stiffness, tight shoulders, and pain in the neck, shoulders, waist, and back. Long-term exposure of facial nerves to cold air can cause facial numbness and, in extreme cases, induce facial paralysis.

Comfort Issues

  1. Physical Discomfort: In winter, hot air blowing directly on the back can cause sweating, while in summer, cold air can make one feel chilly, making it difficult to regulate body temperature.
  2. Noise and Vibration Interference: The noise from the air conditioner can continuously interfere with deep thinking and work concentration. When the office desk is located near the air conditioner, significant temperature differences and airflow changes can occur, and the slight vibrations from some air conditioners may be transmitted through the desk, creating subtle disturbances.

Improvement Measures

  1. Adjust the Air Conditioner Direction: Tilt the air conditioner blades upward to allow the air to blow towards the ceiling and then naturally fall down, or use a magnetic adjustable air deflector.
  2. Physical Isolation: Install an air conditioner deflector or air guide cover. Keep a thin jacket, small scarf, or shawl on hand to protect vulnerable areas such as the back of the neck, shoulders, and knees from the cold.
  3. Reasonable Parameter Settings: Set the temperature between 26ยฐC and 28ยฐC in summer, with an indoor-outdoor temperature difference of no more than 8ยฐC. Adopt a strategy of starting low and then adjusting. Avoid setting the temperature too low, as the risk of facial paralysis from direct blasts doubles below 26ยฐC.
  4. Regular Cleaning: Clean the air conditioner filter monthly to reduce the proliferation of microorganisms.
