New Materials for Office Chairs

Admin October 09, 2026

The new materials for office chairs mainly include microfiber materials, styrene block copolymers (SBC) within the family of thermoplastic elastomers (TPE), humidity-responsive microcapsule materials, topological interpenetrating network (IPN) materials, and negative Poisson's ratio honeycomb structure materials.

Microfiber materials are a high-end category within synthetic leather, offering numerous advantages. They are abrasion-resistant, hydrolysis-resistant, and have better breathability than ordinary synthetic leather. Their price falls between genuine leather and ordinary PU/PVC leather, providing stable cost-effectiveness in seat upholstery, making them an ideal choice.

Styrene block copolymers (SBC) within the TPE family also attract significant attention. They have a unique molecular structure with alternating hard and soft segments. The hard segments form physical cross-linking points, providing shape retention to the material, while the soft segments are responsible for energy absorption and shape recovery independent of temperature. Within the range of 10ยฐC to 40ยฐC, they can maintain a constant support coefficient, and their hardness can be controlled by adjusting the proportion of hard segments without the need for plasticizers, ensuring the comfort and stability of office chairs.

Humidity-responsive microcapsule materials have diameters ranging from 10 to 50 microns. The capsule shells are made of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid), and the interior is encapsulated with lithium chloride or silica aerogel. When the humidity of the contact surface rises, the hydrolysis rate of the capsule shells accelerates, releasing moisture-absorbing substances; when the humidity decreases, the shells repair, and the moisture-absorbing substances are re-encapsulated. This material can reduce surface humidity fluctuations by more than 60% while maintaining a material rebound rate of over 85%, effectively improving the humidity environment when using office chairs.

Topological interpenetrating network (IPN) materials form an interpenetrating network structure at the nanoscale between two incompatible polymers, such as polyurethane and silicone rubber. Polyurethane provides abrasion resistance and tear strength, while silicone rubber contributes low friction and elasticity, increasing the Martindale abrasion resistance from 20,000 cycles of traditional polyurethane to over 50,000 cycles, with a softness reduction of no more than 5%, significantly improving the service life and comfort of office chairs.

Negative Poisson's ratio honeycomb structure materials are auxetic materials with a negative Poisson's ratio. When compressed, they contract laterally, enabling more uniform pressure distribution on the contact surface. The latest application involves embedding negative Poisson's ratio honeycomb structures into soft upholstery substrates to provide more uniform support for office chairs.
