Office Chair Neck Exercises

Admin October 09, 2026

You can use an office chair to perform various movements to exercise and relax your neck. Here are some specific methods:

Basic Stretching

  • Forward and Backward Flexion: Sit on the chair with your back straight. Slowly lower your head to bring your chin as close to your chest as possible. You will feel a stretch in the back of your neck muscles. Hold this position for a moment, then slowly raise your head and tilt it backward to feel the stretch in the front of your neck muscles. Repeat this several times. This movement can effectively mobilize the front and back neck muscles and relieve muscle stiffness caused by maintaining the same posture for a long time.
  • Lateral Flexion: Tilt your head to the left, trying to bring your left ear close to your left shoulder. You will clearly feel a stretch in the right neck muscles. Hold it for a while, then switch to the other side and do the same movement. Repeat this several times. This movement can stretch the muscles on both sides of the neck and reduce tension on both sides.
  • Lateral Rotation: Slowly turn your head to the left, looking over your left shoulder, and then turn it to the right, looking over your right shoulder. Keep the rotation speed slow. This movement helps to mobilize the cervical spine joints and increase the flexibility of the cervical spine.

Dynamic Movements

  • Shoulder Shrugs and Circles: Shrug your shoulders upward, trying to bring them close to your ears, then circle them backward and then forward. Do this several times in a row. This movement can relax the shoulder muscles and also have a certain driving effect on the neck, relieving fatigue in the neck and shoulders.
  • Shoulder Extension Backward: Sit on the chair and extend your shoulders backward 100 times a day. This can reduce symptoms of neck stiffness and soreness and also relieve tension in the shoulders.
  • Lateral Head Turns: Sit on the chair and turn your head left and right 100 times a day. This helps to improve problems such as a heavy feeling in the shoulders and back and promotes blood circulation in the neck and shoulders.

Resistance Stretching

  • Resistance Stretching: Place your right hand on the right side of your head and gently pull it to the right while your head resists by pushing to the left. You will feel a stretch in the right neck muscles. Repeat the same movement on the other side. This type of resistance stretching can strengthen the neck muscles and improve the stability of the neck.
  • Backward Head Tilt with Resistance: Cross your hands behind your head, tilt your head backward, and use your hands to push forward against the tilt, feeling the stretch in the front neck muscles.

Supportive Movements

  • Pushing the Cervical Spine with Middle and Index Fingers: Use the middle and index fingers of both hands to push the cervical spine obliquely upward, creating some space at the back of the cervical spine. When you look up, support your neck to avoid tension and dizziness.

In addition, you can choose appropriate fragmented exercise combination plans according to your work rhythm, such as a 5-minute quick version, a 10-minute standard version, and a 15-minute intensive version.
