Office Chair Neck Disassembly

Admin October 09, 2026

The disassembly of the neck (headrest) of an office chair requires selecting the appropriate method based on the fixing method. The common types and operation steps are as follows:

I. Buckle-type Headrest Disassembly

  1. Locate the Unlocking Point Observe the connection between the headrest post and the backrest. Usually, there are buttons, wrenches, or buckle mechanisms on the side, bottom, or near the top of the backrest. Some designs may be hidden under fabric or leather coverings and need to be confirmed by touch.
  2. Press and Pull Out Press and hold the unlocking button or open the buckle, and at the same time, use the other hand to hold both sides of the headrest and pull it out vertically and evenly. If there is significant resistance, adjust the backrest backward to a tilted angle (about 30ยฐ-45ยฐ) to change the force state of the buckle and reduce friction. Be careful to avoid pulling obliquely to prevent the post from deforming.

II. Pin/Screw-fixed Headrest Disassembly

  1. Check the Fixing Points
    • If there are screws at the root of the headrest post, use a Phillips screwdriver to turn them counterclockwise to loosen and remove them (some screws may be hidden under decorative covers and need to be pried open first).
    • If it is fixed by a pin, first pull the headrest up a short distance (about 2-3 cm) to expose the pin hole before proceeding to the next step.
  2. Remove the Fixing Parts After completely unscrewing the screws or pulling out the pins, pull the headrest straight up. It is recommended to turn the chair upside down before the operation so that the headrest faces downward to prevent parts from falling and injuring people.
  3. Tool Preparation Some designs require the use of a wrench to fix the nut or the cooperation of a Phillips screwdriver to disassemble multi-layer structures. Ensure the chair is stable before the operation (such as locking the casters).

III. Hidden-type (Requiring Back Lining Disassembly) Headrest Disassembly

  1. Loosen the Back Lining Tilt the backrest backward to the maximum angle, feel for the buckles or Velcro at the bottom of the back of the seat that fix the back lining with your hands, and gently tear them open or undo them. Some designs require the use of a plastic pry bar to assist in separating the adhesive parts.
  2. Find the Lock Mechanism After entering the inside of the back lining, locate the hidden lock mechanism (usually plastic buckles or spring locks), and press or slide to unlock with your fingers. If the lock mechanism is rusted, a small amount of lubricant can be sprayed to assist in the operation.

General Precautions

  • Priority on Stability: Lock the casters or turn the chair upside down before the operation to prevent the chair from sliding and causing injury when applying force.
  • Part Storage: The removed screws, pins, and other small parts should be stored in a container. When reinstalling, follow the reverse steps and ensure that the torque is appropriate (avoid over-tightening to prevent plastic parts from cracking).
  • Special Designs: Some genuine leather office chairs or ergonomic chairs need to have the backrest removed first (such as being fixed by bottom buckles or screws) before dealing with the headrest. For such operations, it is recommended to refer to the instruction manual or contact after-sales service to prevent damage to the leather or the internal steel frame.
