Office Chair Musty Smell Solution

Admin October 08, 2026

Musty smells on office chairs can be resolved through methods such as ventilation and sun exposure, adsorption and purification, neutralization and cleaning, and categorized treatment, while an air purifier can also be used to improve the overall environment.

  1. Ventilation and Sun Exposure
Open windows to promote indoor-outdoor air exchange and accelerate the diffusion of free-floating odor molecules. On sunny days, move the chair outside and expose it to sunlight for 1-2 hours to kill bacteria and eliminate odors using ultraviolet rays. Note that excessive sun exposure should be avoided, as high temperatures may cause fading, hardening, or cracking of leather or delicate fabric materials.

  2. Adsorption and Purification
Sprinkle baking soda powder around the chair or on the seat cushion surface, cover it evenly, and let it sit for several hours to 48 hours before vacuuming up the residual powder. Alternatively, place activated carbon packs in the chair's crevices and surrounding areas to adsorb odor molecules. Using an open container filled with baking soda can also extend the adsorption time, but it should be replaced regularly to maintain effectiveness.

  3. Neutralization and Cleaning
Mix white vinegar with water in a 1:1 ratio, dip a soft cloth into the mixture, wring it out until slightly damp, and thoroughly wipe the chair's surface (especially areas that come into contact with the skin), focusing on areas with residual musty smells. After wiping, use a clean damp cloth to remove any residual vinegar smell and ensure the chair is thoroughly dried in a well-ventilated area to prevent secondary mold growth due to moisture.

  4. Categorized Treatment

    • Fabric/Upholstered Chairs: Removable fabric covers can be machine-washed (choose water or permissible hot water based on the material). For non-removable covers, use a fabric attachment on a vacuum cleaner to thoroughly dust and pat the cushion to dislodge deep-seated dirt. After spot-cleaning sweat and stains, dampen a towel with water mixed with a small amount of white vinegar and wring it out to wipe stubborn odor areas. For severe contamination, use a fabric cleaner or steam cleaner for deep cleaning and disinfection, ensuring thorough drying afterward.
    • Leather/Leatherette Chairs: Use interior dry-cleaning foam combined with a cleaning agent and a horsehair brush to repeatedly scrub the surface, switching to a detail brush for corners to avoid leaving cleaning agent residue that could harden the leather.

If the overall office environment has a heavy musty and damp smell, paper documents, fabric chairs, and idle rain gear can easily absorb moisture and breed mold. A desktop air purifier can be used as an auxiliary odor remover. For example, the Airburg KJ60F-P1 adopts a dual adsorption and decomposition scheme, using 800 high-iodine-value honeycomb activated carbon to quickly adsorb gaseous pollutants such as musty smells, and modified TiOโ‚‚ catalytic decomposition technology to precisely decompose odor molecules, improving air quality from the source.
