Office Chair Movement

Admin October 08, 2026

The core operation for moving an office chair mainly involves adjusting the gas lift lock or the slide rail unlocking mechanism at the bottom of the chair, with specific steps varying depending on the type of chair.

For most conventional ergonomic office chairs, the adjustment mechanism is concentrated beneath the seat. When operating, first stand to the side of the chair and reach to locate the round lever or toggle at the connection point between the chair legs and the seat; this is the key unlocking component. After holding down the lever, push the chair forward or backward along the floor to adjust it to the desired sitting distance, then release the lever to automatically lock the new position. If the chair has a five-star base with wheels, the pushing process will be easier, but it is important to control the force and direction to avoid colliding with surrounding objects, preventing damage to furniture or creating safety hazards.

Some older fixed-leg office chairs have slightly different adjustment methods. These chairs may not be equipped with a gas lift or slide rail mechanism, requiring you to first loosen the fixing screws beneath the chair legs to detach the chair from the floor, then manually adjust its position, and finally tighten the screws to reset it. Before operating, it is recommended to check the chair's manual to confirm its specific structure and adjustment methods, avoiding damage to the chair or rendering it unusable due to misoperation.

Additionally, swivel office chairs offer more flexible movement directions due to their 360-degree rotation capability. When using, simply rotate the chair body slightly to change its orientation, facilitating easy access to nearby documents or communication with colleagues. If you need to move the chair's position, you can combine the rotation function by turning the chair toward the target direction before pushing, reducing the hassle of adjusting the angle. The wheel design of such chairs is usually quite smooth, so pay attention to the floor's flatness during movement to avoid the chair becoming uncontrollable or damaging the wheels due to uneven surfaces.

Precautions:

  1. Ensure the chair is stable before adjusting to avoid the risk of falling due to sudden movement after unlocking.
  2. Maintain body balance when pushing the chair, avoiding excessive force or unilateral exertion to prevent the chair from tilting or damaging its structure.
  3. After long-term use, regularly check the tightness of components such as the gas lift and wheels to ensure the adjustment function operates normally.
  4. If the chair has a height adjustment function, it is recommended to lower the seat to its lowest position before moving to reduce the center of gravity and improve stability.
