Office Chair Mold Making

Admin October 10, 2026

The cost of mold making for office chairs cannot be fixed, ranging from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of yuan, depending on factors such as product size, equipment tonnage, and structural complexity.

  1. Product Size: The size of the backrest is a key factor determining the mold size. The cost difference between mold making for a regular-sized mesh backrest frame and a widened and heightened ergonomic backrest can exceed 10,000 yuan. Larger molds require more steel, longer processing times, and consequently higher costs. For example, a large backrest requires a larger mold, increasing steel consumption and processing time, directly driving up mold-making costs.

  2. Equipment Tonnage Requirements: When the projected area of the backrest is large, higher clamping force is required, typically necessitating an injection molding machine with a tonnage of over 500T. Larger models may even require machines with 800T-1000T. Higher equipment tonnage results in higher machine-hour costs per unit of time, leading to increased mold-making expenses. For instance, large backrests see a significant rise in machine-hour costs due to upgraded equipment requirements.

  3. Structural Complexity: If the backrest includes structures such as reinforcing ribs, assembly clips, or wire routing channels, the design of the mold cavity and ejection system becomes more challenging, increasing processing time and costs. The price difference between a plain backrest and an ergonomic backrest with multiple assembly clips is significant. Complex structures require more precise mold design, directly driving up costs.

  4. Mold Steel Selection: P20 steel is moderately priced and suitable for most applications. If the customer requires a longer mold life (e.g., high annual production volume or long-term cooperation), 718H steel can be chosen, which is more expensive but offers a longer lifespan. If the appearance of the backrest is important, better polishing steel may be required. Steel selection directly affects mold cost and lifespan.

  5. Other Factors: The number of cavities (how many parts are produced per mold cycle) is limited by equipment tonnage and mold space. Large backrests are typically single-cavity. Hot runner systems can control gate marks, reduce shrinkage and deformation, but increase mold-making costs, making them suitable for projects with high annual production volumes. Additionally, mold prices found online (e.g., 180.6 yuan, 100 yuan) are often for mold sales, not mold-making costs, and should be distinguished accordingly.

Specific quotes require comprehensive evaluation based on drawings, production volume, and material requirements. Different factories may have varying quoting methods and steel designations, so it is advisable to verify key fields (steel grade, injection method, number of test molds) on the quote are clearly specified after receiving it.
