Mold and Fading of Office Chairs

Admin October 09, 2026

Mold and fading of office chairs require handling based on the material, along with targeted cleaning and preventive measures, as detailed below:

I. Cleaning Methods for Office Chairs of Different Materials

  1. Wooden/Leather Office Chairs

    • Mold Spot Treatment:
      • Wooden parts: Gently scrape off loose mold spots on the surface with a cork piece or an old bank card, avoiding scratches on the paint. Then, wipe with a diluted solution of neutral soap water or 75% alcohol mixed with water at a ratio of 1:5. Immediately absorb residual moisture with a dry cloth after wiping, and finally apply solid wood maintenance wax to form a protective layer.
      • Leather parts: Apply white vinegar (with a small amount of salt added) or a paste of white vinegar and baking soda to the mold spots, let sit for 15-20 minutes, and then wipe. Light-colored leather can be sprayed with diluted bleach (1:10), but avoid dark or painted areas to prevent fading.
  2. Fabric Office Chairs

    • Mild Mold Spots: First, brush off loose mold spots on the surface with a dry brush. Then, wipe with a soft cloth dipped in a mixed solution of white vinegar and warm water at a ratio of 1:10, or use a mild fabric-specific cleaner. Immediately place in a well-ventilated area to dry naturally after wiping, avoiding direct sunlight.
    • Severe Mold Spots: Sprinkle a small amount of baking soda powder on the mold spots and let sit for 10 minutes. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry. Alternatively, wipe with alcohol wipes or spray with a diluted solution of tea tree oil and water, but avoid bleach to prevent fading.
  3. Plastic/Metal Office Chairs

    • Plastic parts: First, test the fading risk of a mixed solution of bleach and water at a ratio of 1:20 in a concealed area. If safe, wipe the mold spots and immediately dry after wiping.
    • Metal parts: If the mold spots are rusty, first gently wipe with a rust remover, then clean with soapy water, and finally place in a dry area. Alternatively, wipe directly with alcohol or a mixture of lemon juice and salt, and use ultraviolet light (such as sunlight exposure) to assist in sterilization.

II. Preventive Measures

  1. Environmental Control: Maintain ventilation and dryness in the office area, and use a dehumidifier during humid seasons. Avoid placing chairs in high-humidity areas such as bathrooms or basements.
  2. Daily Maintenance:
    • Fabric and wooden chairs: Place desiccants in the seams and regularly wipe with an anti-mold cleaner.
    • Leather and metal chairs: Wipe the surface with a dry cloth weekly, and turn on the dehumidifier during the rainy season to reduce indoor humidity.
  3. Timely Cleaning: Regularly remove dust and moisture from the chair surface to prevent mold growth. If water is accidentally spilled, wipe it dry immediately.

By implementing targeted cleaning and preventive maintenance, the lifespan of office chairs can be effectively extended, and issues of mold and fading can be reduced.
