Office Chair Modification Cases

Admin October 11, 2026

Office chair modification cases include three types: modifying Buick GL8 seats into office chairs, transforming office chairs into fishing chairs, and repairing and modifying the armrest surfaces of office swivel chairs. Details are as follows:

Modifying Buick GL8 Seats into Office Chairs

  • Cost: A single original seat costs approximately 100 - 200 yuan, while a pair costs around 400 yuan. The second-hand price for a fabric version is about 300 yuan, and for a leather version, it's about 500 yuan.
  • Modification Plans:
    • Simple and Low-Cost Plan: Acquire a GL8 middle-row seat, prepare an adapter plate and a swivel chair base with universal wheels, fix the adapter plate between the seat and the base, and connect the wiring. The total cost can be controlled at around 210 yuan.
    • Middle-Row Replacement with Aviation Seat Plan: Replace the middle-row seat with a feature-rich aviation seat that offers multiple functions such as forward and backward movement, rotation, electric massage, ventilation, and heating.
  • Advantages: The seats prioritize comfort, featuring left and right armrests, being spacious and comfortable, and conforming to ergonomic design to provide good support. They come with practical functions like USB charging ports, powered by 12V, allowing for a phone charging power of about 16W. They are inexpensive, highly comfortable and adjustable, and can be laid flat to relieve lumbar and cervical pressure.
  • Disadvantages: After modification, the overall seat height may be relatively high. Some users have reported that the seat height reaches 53 centimeters after modification, making it difficult for individuals who are 180cm tall to touch the ground with their feet, potentially affecting posture.

Transforming Office Chairs into Fishing Chairs

  • Suitable Old Chair Types:
    • Folding Iron Chairs: These chairs have canvas seats and iron tube frames, are sturdy, have strong load-bearing capacity, and do not take up much space when folded. When selecting, ensure the canvas is not too loose and the iron tubes are not rusted through.
    • Household Plastic Stools: These stools are lightweight and do not press on the shoulders, but they are too light and can be easily blown away in windy conditions or tip over when catching fish. When modifying, add weights and make them waterproof and dirt-resistant.
    • Scrap Office Chairs with Pneumatic Height Adjustment: Remove the casters and five-star base to expose the metal frame underneath, which can be adjusted in height. Place it on a riverbank slope, twist it to sit flat, and avoid choosing ones with too soft mesh seats.
  • Modification Steps:
    • Chassis Reinforcement: For folding iron chairs, use aluminum alloy scraps to add cross braces at the intersection of the four legs. For plastic stools, turn them upside down and bind bamboo strips or aluminum strips to the bottom.
    • Adding Accessories: Make rod holders from scrap PPR water pipes; drill holes in the chair back and insert iron strips bent into an L-shape to attach sun umbrellas; make bait tray holders by cutting the bottom off an old basin and twisting iron wires into circles.

Repairing and Modifying the Armrest Surfaces of Office Swivel Chairs

  • Tools and Materials: Redwood offcuts, a line saw (or hand saw), a hand plane, sandpaper, a screwdriver, a utility knife, a pencil, wood wax oil (or paint), wood glue, etc.
  • Production Steps:
    • Disassemble the Armrest: Remove the damaged armrest surface from the chair armrest, being careful not to damage the armrest surface support plate.
    • Draw the Model: Use thick cardboard to draw the outline of the old armrest surface (support plate), and then draw the outline on a small piece of wood.
    • Assemble the Armrest Board: Cut out the wood along the line saw, apply wood glue, and clamp it tightly with woodworking clamps. After 24 hours when the glue is dry, remove the clamps.
    • Create the Shape: Plane the back of the assembled armrest surface flat, grind the bottom flat, draw the size outline, saw out the shape, and finally sand and paint (or apply wood wax oil) before installing it on the armrest.
