Office Chair Modeling Ideas
The ideas for office chair modeling mainly cover several key aspects, including clarifying the purpose, reasonably splitting components, following the polygon modeling process, preparing well before modeling, and determining the axis of symmetry and symmetry method.

Clarify the modeling purpose: Office chair modeling serves various purposes, mainly divided into three categories: e-commerce product images, interior scene matching, and animation or product demonstrations. For e-commerce product images, the model should closely resemble the real object and accurately present the textures of different materials such as mesh fabric, leather, plastic, and metal. When used for interior scene matching, the chair does not need to be overly detailed, but the number of faces should be controlled since dozens of chairs may appear in the scene simultaneously. For animation or product demonstrations, the model should be able to split components, with some structures being rotatable or movable. Clarifying the purpose can avoid repeated rework later due to non-compliance with precision requirements.
Reasonably split components: When building an office chair model, it is not advisable to start stretching directly from a single overall box. A more reasonable approach is to split the chair into multiple components, such as the backrest, seat cushion, armrests, and legs. Each component is modeled separately and then combined through methods such as symmetry, attachment, and alignment. This allows for precise control over the details of each part and facilitates later modification of materials and animation production.
Follow the polygon modeling process: First, build a low-poly framework to determine the general shape and structure of the office chair. Then, gradually add lines, create edge loops, and smooth the model to make it increasingly detailed and meet actual needs.
Prepare well before modeling: In 3Ds Max, open 'Customize' -> 'Units Setup' and set both 'Display Unit Scale' and 'System Unit Scale' to 'Millimeters' to unify the modeling units. At the same time, arrange the three-view reference images properly. Create a plane object in the viewport with the same length and width as the actual size of the reference image. Drag the reference image into the Material Editor and assign it to the plane, or use it as an environment background. It is recommended to use the side view as the main reference and the front view as the auxiliary reference. Utilizing the symmetric structure of the office chair, model only one side and then use the 'Symmetry' modifier to complete the other half, saving workload and ensuring symmetry.
Determine the axis of symmetry and symmetry method: Before modeling, clarify the axis of symmetry of the chair. For a normal office chair, the axis of symmetry is in the middle of the chair, that is, along the central plane of the Y-axis or X-axis. After building the model on one side, directly add the 'Symmetry' modifier and select the correct mirror axis in the modifier. It is advisable to use the 'Symmetry' modifier for easy editing and subsequent operations.
