Office Chair Middle Gas Spring

Admin October 11, 2026

The gas spring in the middle of an office chair is a core component used to support the chair back and adjust the height of the seat. It belongs to the category of elastic-locking seat-lifting gas springs, and its performance directly affects the user experience and safety.

Structure and Working Principle

The main components of a gas spring, from the outside to the inside, are the stand tube (outer shell), outer tube, cylinder tube (inner tube), and piston (piston rod + piston top). Its working principle is based on pressure differences:

  • Lifting Process: Achieved through the pressure difference on both sides of the piston head. When gas or hydraulic oil pushes the piston, the seat rises.
  • Lowering Process: Requires an external force (such as body weight or manual pressing) to counteract the pressure difference, allowing the seat to descend and lock at the desired height.

Key Selection Criteria

  1. Lifespan: The industry standard is 30,000 to 50,000 reciprocating tests, with high-quality products capable of 100,000 fault-free cycles. Lifespan directly affects the durability of the gas spring, and high-usage scenarios (such as office environments) should prioritize products with a long lifespan.

  2. Force Accuracy: The force of the gas spring must match the load-bearing capacity of the ergonomic chair (with a conventional load range of 100kg-150kg). The force error must be kept within a reasonable range, with high-quality products having an error as low as within 3%, ensuring smooth and uninterrupted lifting and lowering.

  3. Safety Standards:

    • Material and Sealing: Must be made of high-strength materials with reliable sealing performance to prevent gas or hydraulic oil leakage.
    • Fatigue Life Testing: Verifies structural stability through simulated long-term use.
    • Pressure Relief Protection Mechanism: Automatically releases pressure in case of abnormal pressure to avoid explosion risks. When purchasing, request manufacturers to provide EN16955 certification reports issued by authoritative institutions such as SGS or TUV to ensure compliance with international safety standards.

Precautions

  • Avoid disassembling or modifying the gas spring yourself to prevent damage to the sealing structure or potential safety hazards.
  • Regularly inspect the appearance of the gas spring. If oil leakage, rust, or abnormal lifting is detected, replace it promptly.
  • When purchasing, prioritize branded products, which offer better quality control and after-sales service.
