Office Chair Middle Bulge

Admin October 09, 2026

The reasons for the middle bulge of office chairs mainly include design factors, seat aging, design imitation distortion or size mismatch, and safety hazards, with different impacts arising from different causes.

Design factors: Some office chairs adopt a design that is higher in the front and lower in the back with a bulge in the middle, which is relatively common in ergonomic office chairs and gaming chairs. This design is mainly to adapt to the elastic properties of mesh materials. When a user sits down, the mesh will sag, and the design with a bulge in the middle can form a plane that better fits the body's curves after the mesh sags, thereby improving comfort. However, this design is not suitable for everyone. For people with excessive body weight (generally, it is recommended not to exceed 90kg), when sitting down, excessive sagging of the mesh may cause compression under the thighs, and prolonged sitting can easily lead to leg numbness.

Seat aging: In old seats, the internal springs deform and bulge. When sitting down, there will be a situation where a single hard point presses against the perineal area. Although this bulge does not compress the lower abdomen or constrict the waist and abdomen, the continuous single-point contact with the bottom of the pelvis can, over time, increase bladder sensitivity, causing the need to urinate repeatedly after sitting for just one hour. This situation will improve after replacing the seat.

Design imitation distortion or size mismatch: Chairs designed with ergonomics in mind often take into account the body's curves and are designed to fit the buttocks better to enhance user satisfaction with the chair. However, there may be products on the market that are distorted in imitation or chairs whose sizes do not match the users, which can also lead to a bulge in the middle and affect the user experience.

Safety hazards: A serious bulge of the spring in the middle of an office chair may also pose safety hazards. There have been reports of people being seriously injured as a result, which reminds us to be extra cautious when choosing and using office chairs.
