Arching in the Middle of Office Chairs

Admin October 22, 2026

The design of arching in the middle of office chairs is usually based on ergonomic principles, but unreasonable arching may be related to material, craftsmanship, or transportation issues.

Reasonable Arching: Ergonomics and Functional Design

Some office chairs are designed with an arch in the middle following ergonomic principles, mimicking the natural curvature of the spine. The bulging part helps disperse body weight, reduce lumbar pressure, and minimize spinal strain caused by prolonged sitting. This design aids in maintaining proper sitting posture, relieving muscle fatigue, and enhancing comfort.
Additionally, in some high-end office chairs, the raised middle part may incorporate a gas lift function. The gas lift uses high-pressure gas inside to adjust the chair's height, automatically adapting to the user's body shape and sitting posture to ensure comfortable support for different heights or sitting positions, thereby improving work efficiency.

Unreasonable Arching: Material and Craftsmanship Defects

If abnormal arching (such as local bulging or deformation) occurs in the middle of an office chair, it may be related to the following factors:

  1. Material Issues: Non-compliant raw materials (such as panels with insufficient density) or moisture absorption during production can lead to a decrease in the adhesive strength on the furniture surface. For example, excessive glue spraying may cause the layers of the panel to separate, forming local bulges.
  2. Craftsmanship Defects: Improper process control during processing (such as unstable hot-pressing temperatures or insufficient time) can result in uneven internal stress in the panel, causing deformation. Fluctuations in environmental humidity can also affect the moisture content of the wood, leading to expansion or contraction.
  3. Transportation Damage: Moisture absorption (such as being exposed to rain) or external force compression during furniture transportation may damage the internal structure, causing surface arching. For example, a humid environment can cause the panel to absorb moisture and expand, potentially forming permanent deformation if not dried promptly.

Solutions and Recommendations

For reasonably designed chairs, users should prioritize choosing ergonomic office chairs and regularly check if the gas lift functions properly. If abnormal arching occurs in the chair, contact the manufacturer to investigate material or craftsmanship issues and avoid self-repair that may cause further damage. During daily use, keep the environment dry and avoid long-term exposure of the chair to humid conditions to extend its service life.
