Maximum Height Adjustment of Office Chair

Admin October 11, 2026

When an office chair is adjusted to its maximum height, it is in a state where the gas above and below the piston is relatively balanced without external force applied to the chair. Raising it to the maximum height is beneficial when the chair is not in use for a long time.

Height Adjustment Principle

The ability of an office chair to adjust its height mainly relies on its core componentโ€”the gas spring (pneumatic rod). The gas spring is filled with high-pressure nitrogen gas. When external force is applied to the chair, such as sitting down or getting up, it changes the gas pressure above and below the piston. When downward pressure is applied, the gas below the piston is compressed, increasing the pressure and pushing the piston upward, raising the chair. When upward pulling force (the action of getting up) is applied, the gas pressure above the piston relatively increases, pushing the piston downward and lowering the chair. When the office chair is adjusted to its maximum height without external force, the gas above and below the piston reaches a relatively balanced state. At this time, the gas pressure is evenly distributed, and there is no significant pressure difference to drive the piston to continue moving.

Benefits of Raising to Maximum Height When Not in Use for a Long Time

From the working principle and structural characteristics of the gas spring, raising the office chair to its maximum height is beneficial when it is not in use for a long time. During normal use, due to the weight of the human body, the piston of the gas spring is constantly under pressure, and the gas pressure below the piston remains relatively high. If the chair is left at a lower position for a long time without use, the gas below the piston remains under high pressure for an extended period, which may lead to an uneven distribution of gas molecules and affect the performance and lifespan of the gas spring. Raising the chair to its maximum height allows the gas above and below the piston to be under even pressure, making the gas state inside the gas spring more stable. This reduces the damage to the internal structure of the gas spring caused by long-term local high or low pressure, thereby extending the service life of the office chair.
