Office Chair Material Identification
Admin October 12, 2026
Office chair material identification can be approached from three main categories: seat/backrest, frame, and adjustment components. Here are the specific methods:

Seat and Backrest Materials
- Mesh Fabric: Primarily composed of polyester fiber blended with nylon fiber, it offers excellent breathability, quick heat dissipation, and is not prone to overheating during prolonged sitting. It has moderate elasticity and stable support. Daily maintenance only requires wiping with a damp cloth, but it is susceptible to damage from sharp objects and has a moderate weight-bearing capacity. If the mesh fabric has poor resilience and leaves dents that are difficult to automatically repair after being pressed hard, it is likely ordinary polyester mesh fabric of lower quality.
- High-Density Foam + Fabric Cover: Common accompanying fabrics include knitted fabric, suede, or PU leather, providing a strong wrapping sensation, conforming to the body's curves, and offering high comfort. High-density foam is durable and not prone to collapse or deformation during prolonged sitting, but its breathability is slightly poor, making it prone to overheating in summer. Cleaning requires removing the outer cover.
- PU Leather: It has a texture close to genuine leather, is wear-resistant, dirt-resistant, waterproof, and easy to clean. However, its breathability is poor, making it prone to sweating during prolonged sitting in summer; it becomes hard and brittle in low-temperature environments and is prone to cracking after prolonged exposure to sunlight.
- Genuine Leather (Top-grain/Split-grain Cowhide): It has a high-end texture, excellent breathability and comfort, and is durable, but it is expensive. It requires regular oiling to prevent drying and cracking, is not resistant to scratches, is prone to mold when damp, and has high maintenance costs.
- Breathable Cotton + Mesh Fabric Combination: A commonly used material in high-end office chairs, it combines the breathability of mesh fabric with the wrapping sensation of foam, offering balanced performance but at a higher price.
Frame Materials
- Steel/Aluminum Alloy Frame: It bears the weight and provides structural stability, being the core of the overall durability of the office chair. High-quality frames are usually heavy and structurally stable, and the quality can be initially judged by observing whether the welds are flat and free of rust.
- Metal Tube Material: The thickness can be judged by lifting the chair. If the chair is particularly light, it indicates that the metal tube is thin (e.g., as thin as 0.8 millimeters), and it is prone to breaking when a person of larger weight sits abruptly; usually, a thickness of 1.2 millimeters or more is required for sufficient weight-bearing capacity, but this is not suitable for people of larger weight.
Adjustment Component Materials (Taking Wheels as an Example)
- Five-Centimeter Wheels: With a diameter of 5 centimeters, they have hard edges, are prone to scratching the floor, and make noise when sliding. The metal part is not wrapped in plastic, and the material cost is low (mostly less than 1 yuan).
- PU Silent Wheels: The black part in the middle is made of PU material, which makes less noise when sliding. The metal part is wrapped in a plastic foot, and the cost is usually higher than that of five-centimeter wheels (material cost of 1-2 yuan).
- Six-Centimeter Wheels: They are larger in size, use better materials, and slide more smoothly. The material cost for lower-quality ones is close to 2 yuan, while that for higher-quality ones may reach 2-3 yuan.
