Office Chair Materials
Admin October 22, 2026
The materials of office chairs are mainly divided into two categories: materials for the seat and backrest, and materials for the support structure, as detailed below:

Materials for the Seat and Backrest
Soft Upholstery Materials
- Fabrics:
- Mesh Fabric: Woven from polyester fibers or nylon, it offers excellent breathability and is suitable for prolonged sitting scenarios (such as offices and conference rooms), effectively reducing the feeling of stuffiness.
- Velvet/Linen Fabric: Soft to the touch with a high-end visual texture, but requires regular cleaning to prevent dust accumulation, suitable for environments with high comfort requirements.
- Leather/PU Leather: Smooth and easy to maintain, with strong waterproof and stain-resistant properties, but poor breathability, which may cause a stuffy feeling in summer. It is commonly used in high-end office chairs or seats for management positions.
- Fillings:
- High-Density Foam: With a density of โฅ35kg/mยณ, it provides strong support and is resistant to collapse after prolonged sitting, making it a common choice for office chairs.
- Memory Foam: It automatically shapes according to body pressure, fitting the curve of the back and effectively dispersing pressure. However, it is more expensive and is mostly used in high-end ergonomic chairs.
- Fabrics:
Hard Materials
- Plastic (PP/ABS): Lightweight, waterproof, and moisture-proof, with a low cost, suitable for public places or scenarios with a limited budget. However, long-term use may lead to brittleness due to aging.
- Solid Wood: Often used for the backrest frame or in combination with desktop designs, its natural texture enhances aesthetics. However, it is relatively hard and less comfortable, requiring soft upholstery for use.
- Metal: Commonly found in the backrest support frame (such as steel or aluminum alloy), it provides stable structural support and can incorporate hollow designs to reduce weight.
Materials for the Support Structure
Table/Chair Legs
- Steel: Made of square or round steel pipes with a powder-coated surface for rust prevention, it offers the best load-bearing capacity and is suitable for heavy-duty office chairs or scenarios with frequent movement.
- Solid Wood: Unifies with the desktop style, creating a natural atmosphere. However, it requires moisture-proof treatment to prevent deformation and cracking.
- Aluminum Alloy: Lightweight and corrosion-resistant, suitable for movable tables and chairs (such as training chairs), but slightly more expensive than steel.
Connectors
Usually made of metal materials (such as stainless steel screws), they require a concealed design to avoid scratching the skin or clothing while ensuring structural stability. Some high-end office chairs use reinforced connectors to enhance overall durability.
Material Selection Recommendations:
- For breathability, choose a combination of mesh fabric and high-density foam;
- For ease of cleaning, opt for leather and a steel frame;
- For budget constraints and portability, choose plastic and an aluminum alloy support structure.
