Office Chair Masters

Admin October 08, 2026

In the field of office chairs, Yrjรถ Kukkapuro and Masayuki Kurokawa are two highly influential design masters whose works and concepts have driven the development of office chair design.

Yrjรถ Kukkapuro is one of the most renowned contemporary design masters in Northern Europe. His masterpiece, the Karuselli Chair, was born in 1964 and is hailed as the 'most comfortable seat in the world'. This chair, crafted from fiberglass and leather materials, embodies a hyper-modernist style. Its seat and base are made of fiberglass, with the base connected to the seat armrests via U-shaped metal supports, giving the impression that the seat is floating in the air. It not only rotates 360 degrees but also has a rocking effect. The backrest of the seat features a perfect ergonomic curve that conforms to the human back, providing comfortable support. Additionally, Kukkapuro's Antares Sofa is also noteworthy. It made its debut at the 1964 Cologne Fair in Germany and achieved tremendous success. The Antares Sofa features a metal frame paired with plywood armrests and backrests, upholstered in leather fabric. All structural components are detachable, facilitating manufacturing, transportation, and maintenance. In 1965, the Antares Sofa was permanently acquired by the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York, a testament to its artistic value and practicality. Kukkapuro also received the 'Lunning Prize,' known as the Nobel Prize of the design world, in 1966, a high recognition of his design achievements.

Masayuki Kurokawa is a Japanese architect and industrial designer, hailed as the 'Da Vinci of Tokyo.' Since 1973, he has ventured into designing the 'GOM Series' of rubber products and the 'K Series' of bathroom products, proposing the 'prototype' design concept that encompasses three dimensions: crafting experience, aesthetic experience, and design typology. Although not all of his works focus on office chairs, his design philosophy has had a profound impact on office chair design. His architectural works and industrial design, the 'GOM Series,' have been permanently collected by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, reflecting his outstanding contributions to the design field.
