Office Chair Massage Techniques
The following massage techniques on an office chair can effectively relieve fatigue from prolonged sitting:

1. Shoulder and Upper Back Massage
Cross your hands over your shoulders and make small circular motions with your shoulders as the center, applying a gentle pressure that causes a slight soreness. This action stimulates areas such as the levator scapulae and trapezius muscles, promoting local blood circulation and relieving muscle stiffness caused by prolonged desk work. It is recommended to rotate each side 10-15 times and repeat 2-3 sets daily.
2. Neck Massage
Place the base of your palms on both sides of your neck (near the Fengchi acupoint) and knead in a top-down direction, focusing on pressing the muscle bundles on both sides of the posterior spinous processes of the neck. When you touch cord-like hard knots, pause for 5-10 seconds for targeted pressure to help relax spasmodic muscle fibers. Be careful to avoid directly pressing on the cervical vertebrae and keep the pressure moderate.
3. Lower Back Massage
Place the bases of your palms on both sides of your lumbar spine (around the level of the third lumbar vertebra) and use a circular kneading technique, with the amplitude covering the entire quadratus lumborum area. This method can relieve tension in the psoas major and erector spinae muscles and reduce the pressure on the lumbar intervertebral discs from prolonged sitting. It is recommended to coordinate with deep breathing, relaxing on inhalation and applying pressure on exhalation, for a continuous massage of 3-5 minutes.
4. Neck-Shoulder Reverse Stretch
Sit up straight and cross your hands behind your head with your elbows abducted to shoulder height. Slowly push your head backward against the resistance of your hands while actively sinking your scapulae to feel the stretch in the posterior neck muscles and upper trapezius. Hold for 15 seconds and then relax, repeating for 3 sets. Key Points: Keep your chin slightly tucked in during the stretch to avoid excessive head extension that may put pressure on the cervical spine.
5. Lumbar Spine Rotation for Muscle Relaxation
Sit upright with your feet flat on the ground. Rotate to the right around your waist, using your left hand to support the right chair back for assistance. When you feel a slight pulling sensation in the right lumbar muscles, hold for 10 seconds and then repeat on the opposite side. After completing 5 times on each side, you can combine a forward-leaning motion to enhance the stretch of the iliopsoas muscles. Precautions: Keep the rotation amplitude within a comfortable range to avoid pain.
6. Wrist and Arm Relaxation Exercises
- Wrist Joint Movements: Rotate your wrists clockwise and counterclockwise 10 times each in front of your chest, gradually increasing the amplitude until the forearm muscles are involved.
- Forearm Stretch: Bring your hands together in a prayer position and slowly raise them to the maximum amplitude, holding for 10 seconds before lowering. This action can stretch the brachioradialis and pronator teres muscles, preventing mouse hand.
Implementation Suggestions: Select 2-3 techniques to practice together every hour of work, and coordinate with deep breathing for better results. If you experience local stinging or numbness, stop immediately and consult a professional physician.
