Office Chair Malfunction

Admin October 16, 2026

When an office chair malfunctions, the following solutions can be adopted according to different situations:

Reclining Failure

The reclining function of the chair may be locked. Locate the relevant button, pull it outward, and then lean the backrest backward to restore the reclining function.

Tilt to One Side

  • Check the Wheels: First, confirm whether the wheels are uneven when the chair is placed upright and upside down, ensuring that each wheel foot is in contact with the ground. Turn the chair upside down and carefully inspect each wheel foot for signs of damage. If the wheels are damaged, purchase a new set of matching wheels for replacement.
  • Check the Seat Plate: If all the wheels are in good condition and the ground is level, check the seat plate. Place the chair on its side and locate the metal seat plate, which is usually a roughly square-shaped black painted steel plate located at the bottom of the chair seat, and further investigate the problem.

Backrest Cannot Stand Upright and Cannot Be Adjusted

  • Hydraulic System Problem: The backrest is adjusted by theไผธ็ผฉ (telescopic) action of the hydraulic rod. If there is a problem with the hydraulic system, the backrest will not be able to stand upright.
  • Pivot Fixed Screw Problem: If the chair's toggle is normal and the hydraulic mechanism drops directly when pulled, check the pivot fixed screws. Non-standard screws (such as 10*1) can be replaced with standard No. 10 screws. Use a tap to tap the threads, or directly use a wrench to fit the screw into its original position (length 30 mm). Since forcing the screw in may result in an unqualified fit between the screw, nut, and bolt, a nut can be screwed onto the bolt, and the screw installation should not interfere with the range of motion of the hydraulic rod, which can be solved by adding washers.

Hydraulic Rod Malfunction

  • Inability to Raise or Lower: This may be due to poor internal sealing of the hydraulic rod or a control valve malfunction. Turn the chair upside down, carefully use a tool to disassemble the connection between the hydraulic rod and the chair seat, and check whether the sealing rubber ring is damaged. If damaged, purchase an appropriate sealing rubber ring for replacement and then reassemble. If it is a control valve malfunction, try cleaning the valve to remove impurities. If the problem still cannot be solved after cleaning, a new control valve needs to be replaced.
  • Strange Noises: This may be because the hydraulic rod lacks lubrication or the components are loose. Use professional hydraulic oil or lubricating oil and drip an appropriate amount onto the moving parts of the hydraulic rod, then repeatedly raise and lower the chair to evenly distribute the lubricating oil. If the components are loose, use a wrench or other tools to tighten the loose screws.

Repairing the hydraulic rod of an office chair can be dangerous. Before operating, ensure that the chair is in a stable state to avoid injury if the chair falls during the repair process. If you have no repair experience or cannot solve the problem, it is recommended to seek the help of a professional repair technician.
