Office Chair Making Dimensions

Admin October 13, 2026

The dimensions for making office chairs should be comprehensively designed based on ergonomics and usage scenarios. The specific dimension ranges are as follows:

1. Seat height
The national standard range is 40 - 50 centimeters, with the standard height for men being 41 - 43 centimeters. The design aims to make the thighs perpendicular to the calves or form a 100ยฐ angle to avoid compressing the nerves behind the knees. For office chairs used in work settings, the seat height can be extended to 35 - 50 centimeters to accommodate the sitting postures of people of different heights. If the seat is too high, the legs may hang in the air; if it is too low, it may compress the blood vessels and nerves at the back of the thighs, causing numbness.

2. Seat depth (front-to-back width of the chair)
The suitable seat depth for men is 40 - 42 centimeters, and for women, it is 38 - 40 centimeters. In a correct sitting posture, the buttocks should be in close contact with the backrest, and there should be a gap of about a fist's width (about 5 centimeters) between the calves and the edge of the chair to avoid compressing the blood vessels at the back of the calves. For office chairs used in work settings, the seat depth range is 30 - 40 centimeters, and for partitioned office chairs, it may be shortened to 35 - 40 centimeters due to space limitations. If the seat depth is too long, the back cannot fit snugly against the backrest; if it is too short, it may lead to waist fatigue due to insufficient support.

3. Backrest height
The height of a lumbar-support backrest is generally 39 - 42 centimeters, with a width of 40 - 42 centimeters, focusing on supporting the lumbar region. Special designs such as boss chairs or executive chairs have higher backrests, which can reach 48 - 63 centimeters, providing support for the neck and shoulders. The height range of backrests for ordinary office chairs is 46 - 61 centimeters. A backrest that is too low will cause the waist to hang in the air, while one that is too high may restrict shoulder movement.

4. Backrest inclination angle
The recommended inclination angle for a lumbar-support backrest is 98ยฐ - 102ยฐ to fit the natural curve of the spine and reduce lumbar pressure. For office chairs used in work settings, the backrest inclination angle can be extended to 103ยฐ - 112ยฐ to balance support and mobility. If the inclination angle is too large, it may cause slipping due to the backward shift of the center of gravity; if it is too small, it cannot effectively disperse the pressure on the back.

5. Armrest height
For lounge chairs, the suitable armrest height is 20 - 23 centimeters to facilitate natural relaxation of the arms. For office chairs used in work settings, the armrest height needs to match the desktop, with a standard range of 21 - 22 centimeters, ensuring that the arms are parallel to the desktop when typing and avoiding shoulder shrugging. If the armrests are too high, they may compress the nerves in the elbows; if they are too low, long-term arm lifting may cause shoulder and neck fatigue.

6. Space reservation
At least 90 centimeters of activity space should be reserved around the chair to ensure unobstructed movement when getting up, turning around, or adjusting the sitting posture. If there is insufficient space, it may cause body imbalance or furniture damage due to collisions.

The above dimensions should be flexibly adjusted according to the specific usage scenarios (such as office work, meetings, and rest) and the user's body shape (such as height and weight), giving priority to meeting ergonomic requirements to enhance comfort and health.
