Office Chair Makes Noise

Admin October 09, 2026

The following solutions can be adopted for the noise from different parts of an office chair:

Lifting Column Issues

If the noise comes from the lifting column, it is usually due to internal blockage, causing abnormal sounds during lifting. In this case, evenly apply lubricating oil around the lifting column to allow it to fully penetrate into the internal structure, thereby solving the blockage and abnormal sound problems. This operation is relatively simple and can effectively improve the working condition of the lifting column, reducing noise caused by friction.

Wheel Issues

  • Deep Cleaning: Foreign object entanglement and dust accumulation are common causes of noise in wheels. Hair, pet hair, etc. on the ground can easily get entangled around the wheel axles, and dust and sand particles getting stuck in the bearing gaps can lead to rolling stuttering and friction noise. For tightly entangled hair clumps, disassemble them for cleaning. Use small tweezers or hooks to pick up the surface-entangled objects, or use electrostatic adsorption to clean the hair.
  • Lubrication and Maintenance: If the wheels still make abnormal sounds after cleaning, especially when there is a dry metal friction sound during rotation, it may be due to a lack of oil in the bearings. In this case, use a clean cloth to dip a small amount of sewing machine oil, light mechanical lubricating oil, or special office chair maintenance oil, and apply it to the gaps between the wheel axles and bearings. Rotate the wheels to evenly distribute the oil, and then wipe off the excess oil stains. It is best to clean the dust on the wheel axles before lubrication to ensure the lubrication effect.
  • Check Wheel Material: The original cheap hard plastic wheels or aged and hardened rubber wheels can easily produce relatively loud noise when rubbing against hard floors, and loose wheel structures can also cause abnormal sounds. Consider replacing them with silent PU casters, which can effectively reduce friction noise with the floor.
  • Check Installation: If the installation interface size of the wheels does not match the chair leg base or the installation is not in place, there will be shaking and impact sounds during rolling. Turn the chair upside down and check whether the connection between the five-star feet and the wheels is loose. Try pressing to confirm, and adjust the installation in a timely manner if there is looseness.

Other Part Issues

  • Screw Installation Issues: Loose screw installation is a common problem. Carefully check the screws on all parts of the office chair and tighten the loose screws to ensure that all components are firmly connected and reduce noise caused by looseness.
  • Add Adhesive Tape Gaskets: Adding adhesive tape gaskets between the connections and hole walls can reduce friction and gaps, thereby reducing noise. This method is suitable for parts where noise is generated due to friction or excessive gaps between components.
