Main Position of Office Chair

Admin October 08, 2026

The main position of the office chair should adhere to the following core principles in Feng Shui and workplace culture:

1. Definition and Symbolic Meaning of the Main Position
The main position represents the authoritative spot for leaders or key figures. In Feng Shui theory, it emphasizes a 'stable backdrop', reflecting control and decision-making power. In workplace culture, the main position symbolizes power and responsibility, and occupying someone else's main position without permission may be seen as overstepping boundaries or disrespectful.

2. Core Layout Principles

  • Orientation Selection:
    The main position should be located at the innermost and rearmost part of the office, avoiding proximity to doors or streets, creating a 'sitting against the mountain and facing the water' layout. The optimal orientation is sitting north and facing south (the imperial orientation), symbolizing vigorous yang energy and a stable aura. If this is not achievable, adjustments can be made based on job functions:

    • Sitting west and facing east: Beneficial for the early stages of a career;
    • Sitting east and facing west: Suitable for positions in finance or accounting;
    • Sitting south and facing north: Requires judgment based on specific spatial structures.
  • Back Support:
    The chair back must be firmly against a solid wall. Avoid having windows, aisles, or toilets behind the chair, as this is considered 'having no support behind', which can easily lead to restlessness and poor decision-making. If the office has glass walls, curtains or filing cabinets can be used to create a 'backdrop'.

  • Front View:
    The area in front of the main position should be open and unobstructed, with a minimum distance of 1.5 meters. Avoid facing columns, corners, or walls directly to maintain clear and active thinking.

3. Relationship Between Main and Guest Positions
Guest positions (such as sofas) should form an 'orderly main-guest' layout with the main position:

  • If the main position is in the Kan trigram (north), a sofa in the Dui trigram (west) is 'guest generating host', which is auspicious;
  • If the sofa is in the Kun trigram (southwest), it is 'guest overcoming host' and should be avoided.

4. Workplace Culture Taboos

  • Do not occupy someone else's main position without permission (such as the middle of a conference table or a leader's exclusive office chair);
  • Avoid sitting on a 'hot seat' (a chair just vacated by a leader and still warm), which is considered impolite.

5. Auxiliary Layout Suggestions

  • Aura Balance: Place tall and dynamic items (such as filing cabinets or green plants) on the left (Qinglong position) and low and static items (such as water cups or small green plants) on the right (Baihu position);
  • Auxiliary Furniture: Massage chairs, etc., should be placed according to the leader's genderโ€”male leaders should place them on the left front, and female leaders on the right front, while also considering the balance of the five elements (for example, the price of a male leader's massage chair should be higher than the total price of the office desk and sofa).

Note: The above principles should be flexibly adjusted based on specific spatial structures, job requirements, and personal five-element attributes to avoid rigid application.
