Office Chair Lumbar Adjustment

Admin October 10, 2026

Adjusting the lumbar support of an office chair requires precise step-by-step operation. Scientific adjustment can effectively reduce lumbar spine pressure. Here are the specific methods:

1. Locate the Lumbar Support Adjuster
The dynamic lumbar support adjuster on most office chairs is located in the lower right corner of the backrest and is designed as a circular knob. Some high-end models may use hidden slide rails or button adjustments, which can be confirmed by touching the lower edge of the backrest. If no obvious adjustment device is found, refer to the product manual or contact after-sales service to confirm the type of lumbar support (such as mechanical, pneumatic, or adaptive elastic lumbar support).

2. Clarify the Rotation Direction and Force
Turning the knob clockwise tightens the lumbar support force, while turning it counterclockwise loosens it. However, about 90% of users are prone to confusing the direction. It is recommended to use a 'fine-tune-test' cycle for initial adjustments: After each 1/4 turn, sit down and feel the change in support to avoid excessive force causing the lumbar support to jam. If the lumbar support is pneumatic, trigger the adjustment by pressing the corresponding area on the back, with a force that allows for a slight rebound.

3. Precisely Locate the Lumbar Support Point
After sitting down, maintain a natural sitting posture. The point where the thumbs of both hands meet when placed on the waist is the most depressed point of the lumbar spine (approximately the L4/L5 intervertebral disc position). Adjust the lumbar support up and down to align its apex with this area, ensuring that the support force acts on the lower part of the lumbar spine (3-5 cm behind the vertical line of the body's center of gravity). Tall users need to move the support point up to two finger widths above the navel, while short users should move it down to near the navel until stable support is achieved without the need to consciously straighten the waist or lean back when sitting.

4. Coordinate with Overall Seat Adjustment
First, adjust the seat height so that both feet are flat on the ground, with the thighs and calves forming a 90ยฐ-100ยฐ angle. Then, adjust the backrest angle to a 100ยฐ-110ยฐ reclined position, at which point the lumbar support should fully conform to the curve of the lower back. If the backrest and lumbar support are designed to move together, synchronously adjust the recline tension to avoid the waist hanging in the air when leaning back. Some models support seat depth adjustment, ensuring that the buttocks are fully in contact with the seat surface and there is a 1-2 finger gap between the back of the knees and the seat edge.

5. Cultivate Scientific Usage Habits
Even with proper adjustment, it is still necessary to get up and move for 5 minutes every 1 hour, relieving muscle fatigue through standing stretches, shoulder circles, and other movements. A 2023 study by the University of Heidelberg in Germany showed that correct use of lumbar support can reduce the intradiscal pressure of the L4/L5 intervertebral disc by an average of 47.6 pascals and share 48% of the intervertebral disc load. However, long-term static sitting can still weaken the core muscle strength, necessitating regular exercise to strengthen lumbar stability.
