Methods for Lowering Office Chairs

Admin October 11, 2026

The method for lowering an office chair depends on the type of chair. Details are as follows:

I. Office Chairs with Height Adjustment Function

  1. Regular Lever Adjustment

    • Locating the Adjustment Lever: Find the lever on the support rod of the office chair, usually located below the seat near the gas cylinder. It is mostly in a rectangular or circular shape with an anti-slip texture on the surface.
    • Operation Steps:
      • Seated Adjustment: Sit on the chair and press down on the seat with your body weight while lifting the adjustment lever. The chair will descend with the pressure. For more precise control, you can press down on the edge of the seat directly with your hand.
      • Unoccupied Adjustment: If the chair is unoccupied, press down on the seat firmly with your hand while lifting the lever. Lower the chair by compressing the gas cylinder with external force.
    • Precautions: Keep your body balanced during adjustment to avoid losing balance due to the sudden descent of the chair. If the adjustment lever is loose or stuck, check if it is blocked by foreign objects or if the gas cylinder is aging.
  2. Pneumatic Cylinder Adjustment

    • Locating the Rotary Knob: The top of the gas cylinder of a pneumatic office chair usually has a rotary knob, which may have โ€œ+โ€/โ€œ-โ€ marks or arrow indicators on the surface.
    • Operation Steps: Rotate the knob clockwise to compress the gas inside the gas cylinder and lower the chair height. Rotate it counterclockwise to raise the chair.
    • Precautions: Apply even force when rotating to avoid excessive rotation that may cause gas leakage from the gas cylinder. If the knob is stuck, spray a small amount of lubricating oil (such as WD-40) around the knob and wait for 5 minutes before trying again.

II. Fixed Office Chairs (Without Height Adjustment Mechanism)

  1. Replacing the Gas Cylinder

    • Applicable Scenarios: The chair height is fixed and does not match the table height, requiring a complete height adjustment.
    • Operation Steps:
      • Inverting the Chair: Invert the chair so that the base is facing upwards for easy operation.
      • Removing the Old Gas Cylinder: Use a slender tool (such as a small flat-head screwdriver or a ballpoint pen refill) to press the snap ring (C-shaped spring) inside the base while pulling up the gas cylinder. If the snap ring is too tight, apply edible oil to lubricate the connection. Wait for 20 minutes to 2 hours, and then gently tap the connection with a hammer until a small gap appears and pull out the gas cylinder.
      • Installing the New Gas Cylinder: Align the new gas cylinder with the hole on the base, insert it vertically, and press down firmly. A โ€œclickโ€ sound indicates that the snap ring is fixed.
    • Precautions: Wear gloves when disassembling to avoid scratches. The new gas cylinder must match the original model; otherwise, it may affect stability.
  2. Installing Adjustable Foot Pads

    • Applicable Scenarios: The chair is only a few millimeters to 1 centimeter higher than the table, and there is no need to replace the gas cylinder.
    • Operation Steps: Select threaded adjustable foot pads and screw them into the bottom of the support legs of the chair base. Adjust the height by rotating the foot pads.
    • Precautions: The foot pads must match the diameter of the support legs to avoid looseness. After adjustment, test the stability of the chair to ensure there is no wobbling.
