Office Chair as Low-Value Consumables

Admin October 16, 2026

Office chairs can be classified as low-value consumables for accounting purposes if they meet certain conditions. The specific conditions and accounting treatment methods are as follows:

I. Criteria for Identifying Low-Value Consumables

  1. Monetary Threshold: The unit price or total price per batch must be within the limit set by the enterprise, typically below 2000 yuan. For example, if office chairs with a unit price of 1500 yuan are purchased in a batch of 10 sets, totaling 15,000 yuan, and the enterprise's limit is 2000 yuan, they meet the monetary criteria.
  2. Usage Period: The expected service life should not exceed 1 year. If an office chair is designed or used in a scenario (such as temporary project chairs) that results in an expected lifespan of less than 1 year, it can be classified as a low-value consumable even if its unit price is close to the limit.

II. Accounting Treatment Methods

  1. One-Time Amortization Method: Applicable to items of relatively low value or those prone to wear and tear. If the enterprise directly puts the office chairs into use, the accounting entry is:

    • Debit 'Administrative Expenses' (or other relevant expense accounts) and credit 'Bank Deposit' or 'Accounts Payable'.
For example: Purchasing 10 sets of conference chairs at a unit price of 1500 yuan and putting them directly into use, the total cost of 15,000 yuan is recorded as an administrative expense for the current period in one go.
  2. 50% Amortization Method: Applicable to items that require inventory management. The expenses are amortized in two steps:

    • Upon Inventory Entry: Debit 'Turnover Materials - Low-Value Consumables' and credit 'Bank Deposit'.
    • Upon Issuance: Amortize 50% of the cost by debiting 'Administrative Expenses' and crediting 'Turnover Materials - Low-Value Consumables'; the remaining 50% is amortized upon scrapping or disposal.
For example: When 10 sets of conference chairs are issued after inventory entry, the initial amortization is 7500 yuan (15,000 yuan ร— 50%), with the remaining 7500 yuan to be handled later.
  3. Installment Amortization Method: If the enterprise stipulates monthly cost amortization (e.g., over 12 months), each month debit 'Administrative Expenses' and credit 'Turnover Materials - Low-Value Consumables' or 'Long-Term Prepaid Expenses'.
For example: Amortizing 15,000 yuan over 12 months results in a monthly administrative expense of 1250 yuan.

III. Key Considerations

  • Enterprise Policy Priority: The monetary limit and usage period for low-value consumables should be based on the enterprise's internal regulations, which may vary across industries or enterprise sizes.
  • Tax Compliance: The amortization method should align with tax law requirements to avoid tax risks arising from improper method selection.
  • Physical Asset Management: When using the 50% amortization method, a system for recording issuance and scrapping should be established to ensure consistency between accounts and physical assets.
